Hundreds of Cameron Highlands MCA members have staged a protest against the party central leadership’s decision to swap the Tanah Rata state seat in Pahang - traditionally contested by MCA - with Gerakan.
Held at the Tanah Rata election operations room, Cameron Highlands MCA Wanita chairperson Tan Choo Kuan said that the grassroots were unsatisfied with the central leadership’s decision.
She said she was surprised at the decision, adding that previously the central and state leadership had urged the local MCA to work hard in order to get back Tanah Rata - one of the state seats under the Cameron Highlands parliamentary constituency.
“We found out about the party’s decision from television and the newspapers. We are very disappointed. We didn’t know it before.
“The central leadership did not talk to us... If we can’t (contest in Tanah Rata), we may walk the path according to our wills,” she told Malaysiakini when contacted.
Asked on whether “walk the paths” meant not helping Gerakan campaign, she declined to elaborate further.
Yesterday, MCA president Dr Chua Soi Lek had confirmed that MCA will be exchanging Tanah Rata with Ketari.
This has since sparked some 200 Gerakan members to strongly object against the exchange deal, which was led by Pahang Gerakan chief and incumbent Ketari assemblyperson Dr Ng Keong Chye.
