Pakatan Rakyat has promised a two-term limit for the person holding the Johor menteri besar's post in its state manifesto, which was unveiled yesterday.

Titled 'Johor Maju dan Berkebajikan' , the manifesto promises annual declaration of assets by state cabinet members, all elected representatives, local councillors and their spouses if Pakatan Rakyat takes over Johor.

They are also not allowed to apply for state land during their terms in office.

"Absolute power corrupts absolutely... So we decided to restrict the menteri besar's term to two terms only," Johor DAP chief Dr Boo Cheng Hau ( right in photo below ) said in his speech at the manifesto launching ceremony.

johor pakatan rakyat manifesto launch chua jui meng and dr boo The ceremony was attended by other top Pakatan politicians, including PAS spiritual leader Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat, DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang, PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution, Johor PKR chief Chua Jui Meng ( left in photo ) and Johor PAS chief Mahfodz Mohamed.

According to Boo, that this is the first time the opposition in Johor has come together to suggest a common manifesto.

Other proposals in the manifesto are free water for the first 10 cubic metres used every month, slashing quit rent and assessment, open tenders for all government contracts, free WiFi service in major towns and an education fund for newborns.

People's Consultation Council proposal

Some of the proposals are similar to the policies implemented by the Pakatan state governments in Penang and Selangor over the last five years.

johor pakatan rakyat manifesto launch crowd PAS vice-president Salahuddin Ayub said Pakatan would look into the proposal to set up a People's Consultation Council that would be tasked to meet with the people, NGOs and religious groups every three months to review government policies and keep in touch with the sentiments of the grassroots.

Boo added that Johor Pakatan would need to review the outgoing government's policies and to restructure its debt before it could implement all the pledges made in the manifesto.

As to how long it would take to implement the pledges, Boo said he believed Pakatan would be able to achieve at least 70 percent of what it had set out to do in its first five years in government.
