PAS has sacked four of its members after one of them decided to contest as an Independent candidate for the Sungai Limau state seat, which is being defended by Kedah Menteri Besar Azizan Abdul Razak, in the 13th general election.

Azizan, who is also Kedah PAS commissioner, said they had lodged a report to the party's central leaderships, who later decided to sack Abdullah Hashim for contesting as Independent candidate, his proposer Ahmad Md Daut, seconder Azizan Ahmad and representative Zaki Bakar.

"Yes, they were sacked... on Monday after we sent the letter. All four of them... this is a free country, if they want to be Independent, go ahead," Azizan told reporters in Alor Setar today.

The Sungai Limau state seat will see a four-corner fight between Azizan, his cousin Fadzilah Mohd Ali of Barisan Nasional (BN) and two Independent candidates, Sobri Ahmad and Abdullah.

Azizan said although being challenged, including by his own cousin, he was confident that he would retain the seat as most of the voters in Sungai Limau were his relatives.

The menteri besar said he also believed the Pakatan Rakyat would manage to win two-thirds majority in the state, with PAS getting 18 seats in the state legislative assembly as compared to only 16 in the 2008 polls.

Kedah has 36 state seats. For a party to win with simple majority, it needs to secure 19 seats, but to win two-thirds majority, it needs 24 seats.

In the 2008 polls, PAS won 16 seats, PKR took four, while DAP one.

BN only managed to secure 14 seats, while the remaining one seat was won by an Independent candidate who later joined PKR.
