A crisis manufactured by Putrajaya
YOURSAY ‘Umno is now waiting for Pakatan's move on the issue.’
Cease being soft on hard issues, Zaid tells Anwar
Gggg: Former law minister Zaid Ibrahim is right. It is time to make a clear stand. Will you, Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim, uphold secular Malaysia as stated in the constitution?
It is time for PAS and PKR to draw the line on this issue. You can all still be friends and let the voters decide which one they prefer. Almost 90 percent of Muslim-majority Terengganu rejected PAS after one term.
Anonymous$&@?: Actually there is truth to this - that those that support the word ‘Allah’ to be copyrighted would vote for Umno anyway.
Most fair-thinking Muslims would know it’s wrong to stop anyone from praising Allah, and there are more important things that Allah would require its followers to do, like help the poor, stop corruption and cronyism, etc.
So it is better that Pakatan Rakyat makes a stand. What is right will always be right in the eyes of the fair and God-fearing rakyat.
Well Thats Fantastic: Zaid doesn't seem to understand that a politician is a public servant, and as such, a politician's job is to do as the people ask, and not to polarise decisions into black and white causing issues with minorities.
The horrifying trend throughout the world is that governments are taking more control instead of listening to what the people actually want.
It's a bit like how alcohol is legal in most parts of Malaysia, as just because it is legal doesn't mean you are legally obligated to use it. So why make any noise about it at all?
The only argument that begins to make sense is the holy trinity argument, but even the church is divided on all three being one and just leaves it to personal interpretation and it is mostly a non-issue because of that.
So why can't this handful of objectors just accept that what you call your God is personal and only between you and God?
I also think it is a low act to try to garner political support through the Allah issue like Zaid appears to be attempting here.
These are sensitive issues that mean a lot to many people so they must be handled very carefully and not be polarised like this. A middle ground must be found in order to take into account everyone’s sensitivities.
Flamescanner: Unfortunately, Anwar shows himself up to be spineless on issues such as this. Another one is formation of a shadow cabinet. If he cannot decide on tough decisions when he's not the government, pray tell how he can he decide when he is the government?
If you can't do it, let your daughter do it. She's got the spine for it. Just like your nemesis former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad's daughter, Marina.
Well done, girls, it’s time for change. All the boys are a bunch of kangkung.
Bamboo: We must solve this 'Allah' issue from the root - that is telling Muslims the lies propagated by Umno. It will be hard work to enlighten the misguided and ignorant, but we have to start somewhere.
It looks like our hope lies in the likes of PKR director of strategy Rafizi Ramli and PAS' Parit Buntar MP Mujahid Yusof Rawa. Anwar's responses are reactive, calculative and doesn’t instill confidence in him as a leader.
Anonymous #79199503: I guess Anwar is now convinced that his shot at the premiership is almost beyond his reach. So why should he take a tough stand on hard issues without any assurances of benefits to him?
Relevancy: When a group is leaderless, one needs to step forward to lead and give directions. When a leader that does not do that, someone else can step forward to guide and light up the path rather leave it in a state of chaos.
That is what Pakatan needs to do now. If the leader of this country decides to lead this country into chaos, you steer the country in the right direction. In the end, people see you as the leader.
Aziz Kader: Call all Islamic scholars from all countries to make a decision by referring to the Quran. We cannot depend on Malaysian muftis. We should follow the guidance given in the Quran, while at the same time, not overrule other religions.
Abasir: Everyone except the Umno imbeciles on the streets knows that this is a 'Proudly Made in Putrajaya' crisis designed to force PKR into a corner. And going by the muffled noises coming from Anwar and friends, Malaysians may be sure that is indeed the case.
The question then is, how different is PKR from Umno when it comes to 'keadilan' for minorities? Or is ‘keadilan’ reserved only for some? Zaid has simply sounded the thoughts of many who are looking to Pakatan for answers.
SS Dhaliwal: There are such things as principles that weigh more than political victory as they say you cannot put a good man down forever.
On the other hand, the Malays have yet to achieve the maturity and brilliance of the other races, otherwise they would not be so easily led like sheep by Umno using the same old rhetoric.
Anwar knows this and he has to play this one close to the chest as Umno is just looking for ways to slander him and PKR via the tabloids, such as Utusan Malaysia .
Stronger Backbone: We respect people who have the courage to act righteously and not just rhetorically. Anwar, are you one of these men of courage or just one who plays to the gallery?
Paul Warren: Unfortunately, this evidence show how far removed the Malay leaders are from their own constituents. Obviously, they do fear how the ordinary Malays will respond. And they really don't want to know.
The mere fact that all the noise over the ‘Allah’ issue is coming from the leadership of just a few extremist organisations which is unable to mobilise the masses is telling.
Are the masses necessarily on the same page as Mahathir and co, or Anwar and PAS on this matter?
