The National Fatwa Council yesterday stressed that the demands made by the Coalition of Malaysian NGOs (Comango) were contrary to the teachings of Islam, and are a threat to the nation.

    

As such, the council urged the government to take firm action against Comango, which is considered as a movement that is trying to destroy Islam in the country.

    

Its chairperson Prof Emeritus Dr Abdul Shukor Husin said in a statement that the council opposed the demands made by the coalition, because the group’s aims were contrary to the teachings of Islam, and that they were also contrary to the law and constitution of the nation, as well as international norms.

    

"The demands will create chaos in our society and the country, and could cause a breakdown in the beliefs and way of life of Muslims in Malaysia", he said.    

Among the demands made by Comango were the freedom of sexual orientation and the rights of lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transsexuals (LGBTs).     

Other than human rights issues, the coalition also demanded the right of apostasy for Muslims and religious equality. It also questioned the use of the word ‘Allah’ and the action against Shiism teachings in the country.

    

Abdul Shukor reminded Muslims to unite in tackling the issues, regardless of their political ideology, to protect the sanctity of Islam.

He also urged Muslims involved in Comango to return to the true teachings of Islam.
