DAP's Ipoh Barat MP M Kulasegaran has warned that he would refer Deputy Home Minister Wan Junaidi Wan Jaafar to Parliament's rights and privileges committee if he does not retract his remark on statutory rape.

 

Kulasegaran ( right ) said that he would give Wan Junaidi until tomorrow to retract his remarks.

The deputy home minister had told Parliament during question time on Tuesday that non-Malays are less sensitive to statutory rape.

 

"There can be no justification for his offensive and unsubstantiated answer. The only option for him is to retract his answer and apologise," he said during a press conference at the Parliament lobby.

PKR’s Kapar MP G Manivannan, meanwhile said that Wan Junaidi must be shown the door from the cabinet following his remarks.

“His statement is not only an insult to other races, it is also an insult to Muslims,” he said.

Meanwhile, Kulasegaran also filed a motion to refer two BN MPs, Lenggong’s Shamsul Anuar Nasarah and Kinabatangan’s Bung Moktar Radin, to the same committee for remarks against Seputeh MP Teresa Kok’s Chinese New Year satirical video.

Earlier this week, the two MPs repeatedly said that Kok’s video caused religious and racial tension, but despite persistent requests from the opposition bench, the presiding deputy speakers, Ismail Mohd Said and Ronald Kiandee did not take any action.

Kok ( left ) also revealed at the same press conference today that Wan Junaidi had written a letter to her explaining the remarks the Home Ministry made about Kok’s video in a written answer to Segambut MP Lim Lip Eng.

In the written answer, the ministry seemed to imply that Kok’s video had “belittled” the prime minister, an allegation Kok refutes.

Kok threatened to refer Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to the rights and privileges committee if the particular sentence was not retracted.

Ahead of the deadline she gave to the ministry, Wan Junaidi explained that the particular sentence quotes allegations made by some Islamic NGOs which were unhappy with her video, and is not an insinuation by the ministry itself.

“As such, I won’t be referring Ahmad Zahid to the committee. But I hope the two MPs would be just as courageous to retract their statements,” she said.
