Remembering the passengers and crew

After a search of more than two weeks, the missing Flight MH370 is said to have gone down in the Indian Ocean.

High school sweethearts, honeymooners, expectant fathers, a football fan and an activist were among the 239 passengers and crew on board.  Malaysiakini collates reports to remember them.

Crew (all Malaysian)

Pilot: Zaharie Ahmad Shah, 53

Joined Malaysia Airlines in 1981 and has clocked more than 18,000 flying hours. An aviation enthusiast, flight trainer and recognised as a highly competent pilot. The Penangite had three children, and is warmly known by his extended family members as Tok Mamu Ari.

Co-pilot: Fariq Ab Hamid, 27

Joined MAS in 2007 and has 2,763 flying hours. Flight MH370 was his first Boeing 777-200ER flight without his trainer after passing five tests. Remembered by his local imam as a “good” person, Fariq had planned to marry girlfriend of nine years AirAsia pilot Nadira Ramli. They met at flight school.

Chief steward: Andrew Nari, 50

The Sarawakian father of two joined MAS in 1989. He was an avid Liverpool supporter, his daughter Maira had tweeted.

She was hoping to collect her SPM results with her father. In her tweets she paints her father as caring and easy going, reminding her not to stay up late and always smiling.

The National Union of Flight Attendants Malaysia said that two of the cabin crew were expectant fathers.

Malaysia (38)

Suhaili Mustafa, 30

Suhaili was one of 12 Malaysian employees of semi-conductor firm Freescale and was the youngest child in her family. Her brother Lokman wrote that the industrial engineer was to be in Beijing for a month, and had taken along rendang and instant noodles.

Tong Soon Lee, 31; Muzi Yusop, 50; Ramlan Safuan 32

Also Freescale employees. Tong's uncle said the ambitious young man had already set the date for his wedding this year. Muzi is the brother of the Kuala Langat Umno division chief, while Ramlan had promised a friend on Facebook that they would hang out on his return.

Biby Nazly Mohd Hashim, 62; Dina Mohamed Ramli, 30; Maria Ramli 32; Noorida Mohd Hashim, 57

The wife and two daughters and sister-in-law of former Celcom chief Mohamed Ramli Abbas boarded the flight hours after  Noorida's colleague threw her a party to celebrate her retirement. She was supposed to retire on April 1.

Dina's employer Unicef uploaded on its Facebook page a smiling picture of her, her sisters Maria and Aida and their mother Biby in their grandmother's baju kurung. Biby is described as down to earth and jovial.

Muhammad Razahan Zamani, 24; Norliakmar Hamid, 33

The couple were off to Beijing for their long awaited honeymoon. The couple had high hopes of being parents one day, after a miscarriage. Razahan always called his mother each time he went away.

Stanley Wong Sai Sang, 53

Wong missed an earlier flight and was forced to take the ill-fated one. March 8 was his birthday, but he didn't have time to celebrate as he was rushing to get on the flight with two other colleagues. He went to school at Sekolah Menengah Raub.

Nor Fadzillah Mat Rahim, 37

Her mother-in-law wept when remembering the mother of three as “the best daughter-in-law”.

Sofuan Ibrahim, 33

A photograph of Sofuan which he took with his mother before boarding the plane will be the last his family will have of him. He was the only son. The Ministry of International Trade and Industry diplomatic officer was starting a three-year posting to Beijing. He was supposed to leave last month but it was postponed.

S Puspanathan, 34

A marketing manager with Petronas, he had promised his sister that he would be back to celebrate her birthday which fell on March 9. His father, G Subramaniam, is a security guard, and remembers scrimping for years to pay for his son's university education. Subramaniam said that Puspanathan was the first in three generations to get a “proper job”. His grandfather was a rubber tapper.

Anne Catherine Daisy, 56

Anne was on her way to visit her husband, an air traffic controller, in Beijing. They have two teenage girls. She had called her brother before boarding to say “goodnight”.

Mohd Khairul Amri Selamat, 29

The youngest of three children, the aviation engineer was en route to Beijing where he was due to conduct repairs on MAS aircraft. He had just bought his first house in Shah Alam and had invited his family to come over, said his father.

Some of those shocked by damning news at Beijing's Lido Hotel yesterday had lost their entire families on Flight MH370 - children and grandchildren.

Two-year-old Wang Moheng, nicknamed ‘Boss Mo’ by his babysitters for his bossy manner, was the youngest passenger on board. He had vacationed with his parents, Jiao Weiwei, 32 and Wang Rui, 35 and grandparents Jiao Wenxue and Dai Shuling in Sabah.

Three generations of one Chinese family were also on board. Meng Fanquan, 70 and Xu Chuane, 57, their son and daughter-in-law Meng Bing 40 and Zhang yan 36, and their grandchildren Nicole, 4, and Leo, 2, both US citizens.

Philip Wood, 51

He was returning from Beijing after visiting his long-term girlfriend, an expatriate teacher based in the Chinese capital. The couple had planned to relocate to Kuala Lumpur, where Wood was transferred after working in Beijing for several years. He was an IBM employee.

France (4)

Laurence Wattrelos, 52; Ambre Wattrelos, 14; Hadrien Wattrelos, 17; Zhao Yan, 18

High school sweethearts from Beijing's Lycee Francais International de Pekin, Hadrien and Zhao had holidayed in Kuala Lumpur with Hadrien's mother Laurence and sister Ambre.

Hadrien and Zhao were pictured together in the former's social media page with the caption Je t'aime (I love you).

The Wattrelos had moved to Beijing six years ago and patriach Ghyslain Wattrelos was travelling to Beijing from Paris when the plane went missing. He had expected to meet his family at the airport but was instead met by French diplomats.

Australia (6)

Mary Burrows, 54; Rodney Burrows, 59; Catherine Lawton, 54; Robert Lawton, 58

The Queenslanders were good friends and avid travellers. The Lawtons were doting grandparents and had three daughters, while the Burrows were described by friends as “soulmates”.

The Burrows had sold the family home and moved into a smaller house for retirement before the trip. They were happy parents of adult daughters and a son, and were expecting their first grandchild.

Li Yuan, 33; Gu Naijun, 31

The Sydneysiders were returning to their country of origin for a fresh start when their petrol station business was put into administration.

New Zealand (2)

Paul Weeks, 39

One of two Kiwis on board, he was looking forward to a new high paying fly-in-fly-out job in Mongolia which he hoped could help set up his young family of four.

He had given his wife Danica his wedding ring and watch in case something happened to him while he was away. He told her that the ring should go to their elder son, Lincoln, 3, and the watch to their other son.

Canada (2)

Muktesh Mukherjee, 42; Bai Xiaomo, 37

The couple were holidaying in Vietnam and had left their two young boys with family in Beijing. Married for more than 10 years, the couple travel extensively and usually took their children with them.

Indonesia (7)

Ferry Suadaya, 42; Herry Suadaya, 34

The brothers had accompanied their friend on a business trip in China. Ferry had a nine-year-old daughter while Herry had toddlers aged four and 18 months.

India (5)

Chandrika Sharma, 51

She was a reknown anti-poverty activist and headed the International Collective in Support of Fishworkers in Chennai. She was on the way to Mongolia to attend a conference. She had a university-going daughter and always called her mother when travelling, to inform her that everything was fine.  

Iran (2)

Pouria Nour Mohammadi, 18; Seyed Mohammad Reza Delavar, 29

The duo were travelling to Europe on connecting flights via Beijing using two stolen European passports. They had entered Malaysia from Thailand.

The teenager was on his way to Germany to join his mother, and was said to be an asylum seeker. On Facebook, he wrote: “I am safe.”

They were from The Netherlands (1), Ukraine (2), Russia (1) and Taiwan (1).
