The parliamentary Public Accounts Committee (PAC) is "satisfied" with the explanation provided by the police over the force's loss of assets as highlighted in the audit report last year.

 

PAC chairperson Nur Jazlan Mohamed told reporters during a press conference after chairing a PAC meeting today that inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar has taken "responsibility" to tackle the issue of officers using assets.

 

Khalid himself appeared before the PAC today, after the widespread attention that the force attracted following revelations that they had lost RM1.33 million worth of assets.

 

These included 159 handcuffs, 49 guns, and 29 vehicles.

 

"The police use tens of thousands of guns. This (loss) is not significant enough to us to warrant further investigation," he said.

“We have to accept that there will be certain losses of assets when police are in duty, especially while doing dangerous jobs.

“Overall, we are satisfied with the actions of the police and the Home Ministry in strengthening their asset management,” Nur Jazlan said.

He said that the police were aware of the public attention regarding their management of assets, “especially assets that can harm people’s lives”.
