Najib, the point is security, or lack of it

YOURSAY ‘But PM Najib, even with Esscom our borders are still porous.’

PM: Abduction may be a deliberate act to sour ties

CiViC: What? We have two persons abducted from a tourist spot in Sabah by gunmen who came onto Malaysian soil by boat and all PM Najib Razak is concerned about is the possibility it could be deliberately done to sour ties with China?

Ace: Why speculate on what you really do not know and divert blame? The most glaring fact is that our security forces are close to useless. They cannot protect our airspace and also our coastline.

The home minister, defence minister, inspector-general of police, Navy and Air Force chiefs, and the PM should take responsibility and not push it on "deliberate act to sour ties".

If your security is good, this "deliberate act" would have failed.

Apapunboleh: I thought the government promised there will be no repeat of such incidents by putting in more resources into security after the Lahad Datu crisis.

This is nothing but hot air. What about the recent Philippines peace deal facilitated by Malaysia?

Haveagreatday: But, Mr PM, the point is, with Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom), our borders are still so porous. What sort of security are you providing tourists to Sabah?

Quigonbond: The PM seems to be deliberately missing the point. People are abducted. The abductors see cash value in them. The motive is irrelevant whether they do it to disrupt relationship between Malaysia and China.

The point is that security is lax. Our borders are so porous that once these abductors, militants, and invaders discover they are not properly protected, they will keep coming back.

It's the federal government's responsibility to safeguard our borders. If patrol vessels and military patrols on the ground aren't enough to safeguard the borders, then it's time to be truthful with Sabahans, especially tour operators conducting business at the edge of the borders - and to provide them with, at the very least, some help and training so that they can safeguard their guests.

It is gross negligence if the government only blames robbers for robbing and kidnappers for kidnapping and not provide a solution that is in its power to do so.

Onyourtoes: I think it is ridiculous to simply assume that the kidnapping was done to tarnish the relationship between Malaysia and China.

If you ask me to venture a guess why this incident has happened, it is simply this: that part of the region is now a “no man's land”, where foreigners can come and leave at will.

Our security forces are ineffective and unable to control the situation. Kidnapping for money and rape are the most likely reasons, what else could it be?

To put it bluntly, those bandits would not know what foreign relations between Malaysia and China is all about. It is not like kidnapping and robbery have not occurred routinely in that region before the MH370 incident.

I think under the present circumstances, it is best that Malaysia undertakes measures to discourage foreign tourists from going there.

Oracle: The kidnapping of a Chinese tourist "might be a deliberate act to sour ties between China and Malaysia, Prime Minister Najib Razak said". Really?

So by that convoluted logic, can we say that since a Filipino worker was also kidnapped, the act could be to “sour relations" with Philippines as well?

Anything to divert attention from the fact that eastern Sabah is becoming more and more like Somalia as a result of security failures.

Abasir: Najib is speculating - just what his paid officers say Malaysians should not do when the facts are not known, otherwise action would be taken against these rumour mongers. But then, there is always one rule for Umno and another for the rest.

Hplooi: Is this is the kind of leadership by Najib? By apportioning blame? It doesn't matter the motive, but the very fact that our security and sovereignty has been breached is a cause for concern.

By right, your first signal should be a re-examination of national security policies and the eastern command in particular. Spare no one in this urgent study. The first person hauled up should be the commander of Esscom.

Britain only started to win battles during World War Two when Winston Churchill sacked non-performing generals during the early years of the war.

Wsoi: Najib always deviate from the key issue. The question is national security, not the intent of the kidnappers.

Whether it is a deliberate act or not, the police force has a full responsibility to protect the people.

What a joke, when you have one incident after another, when a small group of foreigners can just take a speed boat and cross your territory without notice and kidnap locals or tourists.

Incompetency, that’s the root of the problem.

Lawrence-ttp: Our PM and MCA are good at speculation. If both have evidence, please call a press conference and let both local and foreign reporters grill them.

Doc: "Deliberate act to sour ties between China and Malaysia". Give Najib a few days and he will blame the kidnapping on Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim.

PM’s farfetched theory on Sabah abductions
