Trio in PKR race – it’s time to go beyond race

YOURSAY ‘Shouldn’t it be about their ideas, ideals, characters and values?’

A Saif-Nurul-Rafizi combo is unwise

Onyourtoes: Terence Netto, I think I am older than you, but I don’t see Saif-Rafizi-Nurul combo as a “Malay tendency”. On the contrary, I see them complementing their strength and appeal to bring vibrancy and improvement to the party.

We must look away from skin colour when choosing our leaders because their appeal must be based on their ideas, ideals, characters and values.

Just like I do not consider DAP a Chinese party even though the leadership is largely helmed by Chinese at this time.

But do you? I hope a veteran journalist like you has not fallen into the mould of the Umno-BN propaganda machine.

Joker: The writer forgets himself. He claims the action by the trio is unwise as it portrays domination by one race in PKR, but he forgets that his very statement is in itself racist. Yes, the trio is made up of Malays but they are also capable Malays.

Which non-Malays would he advocate to replace them? Tian Chua? More activist than leader. Baru Bian? He is a great leader in Sarawak but his national exposure is limited. N Surendran? Even more inexperienced than young Nurul Izzah Anwar.

And is it wise to put such an untested (though committed) new PKR member in a powerful position so soon?

The writer should not just assume when Malays step up, it is just because of race. There are capable Malays aplenty in PKR, DAP and PAS. Let's not penalise them just because they are of the majority race.

Fair Play: And it comes to pass that it is an immutable fact that the racial DNA is imprinted in every Malaysian, even before birth.

We just cannot see beyond the fact that Saifuddin Nasution, Nurul Izzah and Rafizi Ramli are capable Malaysians, like M Kulasegaran, Lim Guan Eng, Tony Pua and Gobind Singh Deo, to name a few.

Whither the hopes and aspirations of our future generations?

PleaseLah: The writer's logic and analysis is based on race not merit. If we are to ever move to the latter system, let us start by giving tokenism a kick out the window. I'm Chinese by the way.

Appum: A lot of us see these candidates as Malaysians, not Malay. So let us just move away from these race-based assumptions. If we don't start now, we never will.

Cocomomo: I would have no problem if all the vice-presidents were Malay, Chinese, Dayak, Kadazan or from any other ethnic or mix in so long as they are Malaysians and consider other Malaysians as Malaysians, and not differentiated on race or religion.

We should discard politicians who continue to use race and/or religion to gain support and consequently divide Malaysians. We should work together to reject racism and religious extremism.

Zaid: Najib or Anwar must get the boot for 'cover up'

Chapati: Zaid Ibrahim, what you are saying is actually the right way to run a government, or even a company.

The Malaysia Airlines (MAS) CEO, Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) head, Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) chief, transport minister, defence minister, and immigration chief should take responsibility and announce their resignation as soon as this crisis comes to an end.

But can we expect this in our country?

Onyourtoes: Zaid, did you exactly understand what Anwar was saying? The “cover up” was the delay in relaying the information as captured by our military radar, don’t you get it?

So what do you want the Parliament to expel him for? Please don’t pretend to be neutral here. We know which side your bread is buttered on nowadays.

I think Malaysians have given you many chances. We have since given up on you for now.

Spinnot: If you didn't chicken out, Kajang voters would have given you the boot last month.

Mushiro: Zaid goes 'high' on his statements. No one asked him for his comments, he has no platform, no consistency in his stands, and he is past his political life.

Abasir: Zaid is obviously emulating the eminently absurd Ku Li (Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah) - saying all the right things to no one in a large, empty room, listening to himself and feeling good. Pitiful indeed.

Thana55: When you have lost your credibility, even when you say sensible things, it does not carry any gravitas.

Former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad, political scientist Chandra Muzaffar, Raja Petra Kamarudin, Umno, MIC, MCA, Gerakan, etc, all suffer the same way.

My advice to you, is just fade into the sunset and do not preach anymore. Nobody is listening.

Homesick: Zaid, which/what mask are you wearing at the moment?

Single Malt: If you really want to make someone accountable and force them to resign, there will be no ministers left in the cabinet.

There is no precedence of any minister in the Umno-led government resigning on a matter of principle. They are only good at pointing fingers at others for their failure.
