A case of 'don’t do as I say' for Hisham

YOURSAY ‘So, suing for false reporting only applies to newspapers other than Utusan?’

Hisham denies Utusan's CIA link to MH370

Louis: “Like any Western media too, they are free to report what they like to report. But at the end of the day, if their reporting is false, they lose credibility,” said Defence Minister Hishammuddin Hussein.

Hisham, this is one of your best statements ever and we hope that this is truly the policy of the government.

Lim Chong Leong: No Hishammuddin, Utusan Malaysia is not free to report whatever it wants. There are laws to prevent the reporting of falsehoods.

And your paper is often used (more like abused) to oppress those reporting the truth. How is it that when it comes to Utusan , it is free to report whatever and it is only the newspaper's credibility at stake? Does it have something to do with Utusan being owned by Umno?

And why is the attorney-general (AG) taking note of those "falsely reporting" on the MH370 when they report versions different from yours? Why are they not free to report whatever they want when it is only their credibility at stake?

Yellow Pages: Indeed, were you not the one who instructed the AG to compile evidence to take legal action on the media for false reporting on the MH370 crisis?

Swipenter: Yes, didn't Hisham threaten to sue others for false reporting not too long ago but now he defends Utusan by declaring that "they like any Western media are free to report what they like to report and if their reporting is false they lose credibility".

He is speaking with a forked tongue, as expected of any Umno Baru politician.

Hmmmmmmmm: So suing for false reporting only applies to newspapers other than Utusan ?

Mob1900: Utusan just claimed it has 'quality readers' . Are you saying Utusan is lying and it is nothing but another gutter-spewing propaganda machine, which everyone suspects?

Milosevic: So Hisham is on record saying that the media should not be controlled by any governmental authority and the only cost to irresponsible journalism is the reputational loss incurred by the media outlet.

I hope he and his government don't end up saying one thing when it comes to Utusan , selectively favouring it because it is a tool of the government’s survival and control, while engaging in selective persecution against alternative media outlets.

It is plain all over the world that the Malaysian government practises selective persecution, but by doing this excessively, the country is beginning to look very bad, and eventually will produce a negative result for 90 percent of the population.

But Umno is unlikely to care about this, since its priority is to make hay while the sun shines, and for Umno, using the word ‘nation’ is a rhetorical device for power.

Nonetheless, it is not wise to be blatantly inconsistent and confirm the world's impression of Malaysia following the MH370 crisis.

Idiot: If Utusan has guts, it should blame it on the Communist Party of China... It would be fun to see how Hisham will react.

Abasir: Inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar categorically stated (in his quaint ‘Inggeris’) that all the passengers have been cleared. Everyone heard it and the assembled media reported it.

Yet the acting minister says “I don’t think the IGP would have meant that they have all been cleared". So what did he mean when he said that all the passengers have been cleared?

This Bahasa Inggeris problem is really confusing everyone. Perhaps from now on, the media should always seek clarification by asking this question whenever Hishammuddin or the IGP or that Department of Civil Aviation chief says anything: "So what do you really mean by that?"

Myop101: Typical hypocritical, isn't it? On one hand, Utusan claims it is a better “parking operator” when comparing itself with Malaysiakini and on the other hand, it publishes unverified 'reports' made out of its own imagination.

It seems in Malaysia, it is okay for those linked to the ruling party to preach, "Do as I say, not as I do."

Abasir: Yes, we get it. Utusan , your mouthpiece, is licensed to lie, lose credibility (and advertising revenue) and still receive bailout money to stay above the water. Clearly this is a privilege reserved for the totally inept.

Doc: I see the point, Utusan . You may be right. CIA may have wanted to get its hands on MH370's precious cargo of mangosteens.

Aries46: Doc, at least your CIA and the mangosteen part of the conspiracy sounds more believable.

Could that be why the IGP has been relentlessly searching for its source, who plucked them, who packed them, who loaded them, etc?

Hisham is right and Utusan got it a bit twisted. It was not to “sour our relations with China” but for the Americans to get their hands on our mangosteens.

Utusan, self-praise is a disgrace
