YOURSAY ‘Will a certain class of people have immunity from hudud?’
Zul Noordin slams critics of Brunei hudud law
Gerard Lourdesamy:
Read the Brunei hudud bill. The sultan has very conveniently exempted himself from the law and by extension members of the royal family.
If hudud is ordained by Allah, and the ruler is not above Allah, why has he as a servant of Allah exempted himself from the divine law?
The bill expressly states that the powers and prerogatives of the sultan as the ruler of Brunei and as the head of the official religion in Brunei shall not be affected by this law.
From my reading of the hudud, it is applicable to all Muslims regardless of status, power or position. Therefore, can the ruler make such exemptions from the hudud for himself and his family or is he also acting contrary to the principles of syariah?
Ferdtan: Gerard Lourdesamy, a good point. In Brunei, hudud laws are for other poor souls who need to be saved by God’s laws but not for royalties, including the sultan himself.
What does that means? That the Sultan of Brunei is above God? As in Brunei, we wish to ask PAS when they propose the hudud amendments in Parliament, will the royalty in Kelantan be similarly exempted?
Awakened: If the King of Thailand wanted to implement a more stringent Buddhist values into the government administration or Queen Elizabeth wanted more Christian ways to be incorporated into the government administration, I think many will not criticise them as much as what the Sultan of Brunei is getting.
Both the king and the queen has lived righteous lives without much scandals like wild parties with celebrities, etc. Both are well respected by their subjects.
Humans tend to judge the integrity of a person by the way he/she speaks and behaves. It is natural for people to criticise the sincerity of an individual if he tries to advocate something which does not reflect his own behaviour.
Negarawan: It is interesting that those championing hudud do not have a clean record themselves, including former MP Zulkifli Noordin and the Brunei sultanate, as the Malaysiakini article has highlighted.
Why then are they championing hudud, especially if they know that their sinful tendencies will subject themselves to the laws of hudud? Is it because certain class of people are exempted or have immunity from hudud, as in the case of today's corrupted civil courts?
Then hudud is not God's law anymore, it’s another pretense of being holy.
Swipenter: The Brunei sultan wants hudud implemented in his sultanate but he himself is exempted from hudud. Is that what you call "submitting to the will of Allah"? I call it something else.
Zulkifli, who are you trying to fool? Those flocking to Brunei to learn about the implementation of hudud must be interested to know how his royal highness can be above God's laws - this is a case of hudud for the ruled and not for the rulers.
David Dass: The question has to be asked and addressed - is Malaysia for the Muslims alone? The answer is no. Why not? Because non-Muslims are also citizens of Malaysia and under the constitution, they are equal citizens entitled to practice their own religion.
Are non-Muslims regarded as kafirs under the law? The answer again is no. Do all Muslims in Malaysia believe that all non-Muslims in Malaysia will go to hell because they are non-Muslims? I know that the answer is no because I have Muslim friends who tell me so.
The second question that must be asked is hudud is absolutely necessary? I have heard eminent Muslims - experts in Islamic law - say that it is not absolutely necessary.
There could be circumstances when it would not be implemented. Muslims who are the minority in many countries cannot practice hudud.
And likewise, Muslims who live in countries like Malaysia, a country that has a substantial non-Muslim presence and has adopted a constitution that is secular.
Anonymous_1395303251: Zulkifli, maybe you should read the high-class escort’s account of what she claimed how she and the Brunei sultan broke the syariah law.
Hello: Zulkifli, no one is disputing the right of a person wanting to follow Allah's law, or their personal religious law. Just don't impose it on others, even if they are of the same religion.
After the revelations of the girl about the Sultan of Brunei and their sex romps, its ultimate hypocrisy on his part to proclaim hudud in Brunei. One wonders whether the harem is still there.
Fair Play: No man is an island. Neither is a sovereign state. HRH (His Royal Highness) Sultan of Brunei could do what he wants to do as far as hudud is concerned there.
But already the Beverly Hills City Council had urged the Brunei sultan to divest his property investment (the famous Beverly Hills Hotel) there.
Zulkifli, I just can't understand your logic. By your reasoning, I wonder why the Muslim world want to invest in these 'sin' states as you alleged.
Anonymous$&@?: Hudud is imposed to the people that have no money to travel overseas. The rich will just do all their ‘haram’ work overseas.
