Chong Eng wants chemical castration for rapists
MIC Wanita and DAP Wanita had voiced anger over reports of a teenager being raped by 38 men in Ketereh, Kelantan, describing such acts of violence as inhumane, calling on authorities to immediately clamp down such atrocities.
DAP Wanita chief Chong Eng has proposed chemical castration for convicted rapists following a gruesome case where 38 men gang raped two students in Ketereh, Kelantan.
"This isolated case reflects that we need to have deterrent sentence against rapists who are worse than animals.
"I urge all MPs from the two sides of the political divide to amend the relevant law to have chemical castration on convicted rapists to prevent them from repeating the offence as well as to deter others," she said in a statement today.
Chemical castration, unlike its surgical counterpart, involves administering drugs that reduce the sex drive of the offender.
Chong, who is also the Penang state committee chairperson for youth and sports, women, family and community development, added she is opposed to the death penalty for rapist.
She also stressed that besides stringent laws, priority should be given to identifying the suspects, compiling sufficient evidence and an efficient prosecutor to charge the offenders in order to uphold justice for the victim.
'Rape not due to sexy attire'
She said the case once again proves that rape is not an impulsive act due to the sexy attire of victims but a target identified by suspects who follow up with careful planning.
In the present case, she added the female friends of the victim are also involved to ensure that the victim was not alerted.
Meanwhile MIC Wanita chief Mohana Muniandy ( left ) said violence against women is not just a women's issue but a human rights one.
“There is an urgent need to promote and protect the safety of women and girls in Malaysia. Every girl and woman should be able to live safely and free from violence,” she said.
“These crimes need to end - sexual harassment and violence cannot be tolerated. We urge that political will be translated into concrete action and stronger implementation of already existing laws and regulations,” Mohana added in a statement.
Mohana further called on lawmakers, the police, and the government to everything in their power to take up radical reforms, ensure justice and reach out with robust public service to make women's lives more safe and secure.
It was reported that police have arrested 14 suspects , including a father and his two teenaged sons, in relation to the case.
