PAS has dismissed Selangor Umno's move to table a motion regarding the implementation of hudud in the state as a political ploy.

This is because Umno had rejected similar motions when it was tabled in Terengganu.

Former Selangor PAS commissioner Dr Abdul Rani Osman ( left ) accused Umno and BN of "cakap tak serupa bikin" (not walking the talk).

"If Umno is sincere, the Terengganu Umno government should have allowed the debate over a motion to support hudud. However, they rejected such a motion recently (last month).

"Similarly Umno controls Johor and it should have supported hudud to be implemented there but they did not. For me, I think this is a ploy," he told Malaysiakini .

The Umno move has put not just PAS and its opposition allies in a quandary, but also its own BN partners. However, only Umno has state representatives in Selangor, with 12, while the ruling Pakatan Rakyat has 44 (PAS with 15, DAP, 15 and PKR, 14).

Abdul Rani, who is also Meru assemblyperson, said PAS spiritual adviser Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat has also advised party members to tread cautiously when dealing with the hudud issue.

As such, he said Selangor PAS will be careful in stating its stand on the matter.

Abdul Rani said the priority in implementing hudud is not in Selangor as it does not have the legislation, but in Kelantan where the legislation was passed in 1994.

"Let's see how sincere Umno is supporting in Kelantan first, as that is the priority. Umno should see the situation there and support its implementation there, where the majority are Muslims," he said.

Yesterday, it was reported that Umno's Sungai Air Tawar assemblyperson Kamarol Zaki Abdul Malik filed a motion mooting for a study on enforcing hudud in the state.

Selangor speaker Hannah Yeoh ( right ) said she is unlikely to reject the motion.

The motion is for the assembly to urge the Selangor government to study the possibility of the implementation of hudud in Selangor in the near future, in line with Article 3 of the Federal Constitution where Islam is the religion of the federation.

Implement hudud in BN states

Abdul Rani's views was also shared by present state PAS commissioner, and Selangor exco member, Iskandar Abdul Samad.

Iskandar ( left ) also questioned why Umno did not implement hudud in states which it and BN have control over.

He was quoted by party mouthpiece Harakahdaily as questioning the timing in which Umno wants to table such a motion.

"They have been in power for 50 years in Selangor but have not tabled such a motion. Now they are the opposition, they want to talk about hudud," he said.

"Similarly, in Terengganu, the BN government had rejected the motion for the implementation of hudud there," he added.

Iskandar, who is also Chempaka assemblyperson, said Umno and BN should be implementing hudud in states which they control if they are truly sincere and not play politics.

Terengganu PAS Bukit Payong assemblyperson Mohd Nor Hamzah tabled a motion for hudud to be implemented in the state last month, but the motion was rejected by state speaker Mohd Zubir Embong.
