Selangor speaker shows what democracy can be

FREE YOURSAY 'Let's see how MCA and Gerakan get out of the deep hole they've dug themselves into.'

Selangor speaker allows hudud motion

Casey: Selangor speaker Hannah Yeoh is absolutely right to allow the motion to be debated even if it was submitted by an opposition legislator. It is an act of democracy which is so obviously absent in the BN-controlled Parliament and BN state assemblies.

Liberty and democracy can only be served and sustained when there is discourse and debate. In fact, the state legislators from both sides of the divide should debate and settle the issue of whether hudud law is bad or ultra vires the federal constitution.

Fair Play: Yeoh, you did the right thing in allowing the motion on hudud to be debated. Now, let's see how MCA and Gerakan get out of the deep hole they've dug themselves into.

Sleepy: Everybody is entitled to their opinions, views and comments. I have always disagreed with hudud because it is irrelevant in this day and age, that's my view others may differ.

Debating or awareness, knowledge and action, that is the order I subscribe to.

James TCLow: Hannah Yeoh, you are smart to have allowed the debate, failing which you and by extension Pakatan Rakyat would be demonised as being anti-Islam.

Opposite Of Wrong: Now all the BN reps (especially Umno) both in Parliament and the state assemblies throughout the country, the so-called fighters of hudud, should be shivering in their pants.

The good, the bad and the practicality of hudud will be thoroughly debated by Umno representatives in the Selangor state assembly. Let us wait and see what rubbish is going to be spewed out by them.

Fairnessforall: I don't agree that hudud should even be given time to be debated. We are not an Islamic country and by agreeing to allow a debate on hudud, it is as good as saying that it can be implemented.

People here who are agreeing that Yeoh did the right thing do not seem to understand that she is stupid to even give hudud the time of day. We are a secular country and there is no reason any time should be wasted on debating hudud.

Argonist: If the Parliament speaker can totally block the opposition's requests for debates on very necessary issues and matters that affect the entire nation, I don't know why the Pakatan government must give in to Umno's silly, provocative motions for debate.

Don't fall into a trap that can politically blast away all PKR's support base and credibility. Give the BN, especially Umno, a taste of their own medicine as they would not bat an eyelid to deny a meaningful motion from the opposition.

Tell the Truth: Critics here of Yeoh's decision should learn to see a little further, and you will understand that if there is a debate, then everyone can see if hudud is good for all. How can any hudud law be passed when Pakatan overwhelms the house?

It is Umno's dirty trick to force PAS' hand on this issue, so let us see how PAS and Umno will deal with it. After all, this is a good platform for Umno to say why they want hudud, and if so why is it not implemented in all BN-controlled states?

Onyourtoes: This is the way to go. Let the debate begin and see what happens. Suddenly you will find Umno has nothing much to say on hudud. I mean, why do they want to debate it in Selangor when they don't even have the number to carry the motion?

They should do it in Johor or Perak if they want hudud so much. Who wants to wager with me if I say Umno will back off? Malaysia is now full of hudud paper tigers.

Ketuanan Rakyat: Where are leaders of (hudud critics) MIC, MCA and Gerakan? Your boss Umno has decided to initiate hudud in Selangor, so what is your stand now?

When it is PAS hudud, you people blame DAP. Now it's Umno hudud, who will you blame? If you all keep quiet, you will be confirming that you are nothing but running lap dogs of the Umnoputras.

Louis: All Pakatan assemblypersons should just keep quiet during the debate and let all the Umno men have their say. Let us see how MCA chief Liow Tiong Lai and Gerakan chief Mah Siew Keong will react.

Will they say, "Umno hudud over my dead bodies," like the late Karpal Singh had once said?

Odysseus: Now the ball is in Umno's court to produce a logical explanation to the state assembly. Let's see if their state assemblypersons are able to articulate this topic properly. Hopefully, it's not going to be a chest-thumping session on religion and race.

5295: Let the Aduns show us how much they know the federal constitution when they debate the motion.

From here, we can observe who has the courage to speak about truth and who will promote lies and display their arrogance. Please do your homework, you better be ready, my dear Aduns.

Anonymous #44199885: Such a difference between the speaker from the opposition and the speaker from BN in Parliament.

A speaker should be neutral and evenhanded except when casting a vote. BN should learn from Pakatan on putting true democracy into action.

Wira: Let the youngest speaker of them all teach these old Umno uncles and aunties in Parliament why controversial topics introduced by the opposition should be debated.
