Selangor state assembly speaker Hannah Yeoh has explained that she allowed the motion to debate the hudud issue because she is the speaker for all parties.

Therefore, she added, her personal view does not matter.

"When I am the speaker, I am no longer a DAP or Pakatan Rakyat member," she told a press conference.

Yesterday, Yeoh approved  a motion proposed by Umno state assemblyperson for Sungai Air Tawar Kamarol Zaki Abdul Malik, asking the Pakatan-ran Selangor government whether they want to implement hudud or not. It was not a bill to propose the implementation of the Syariah law in the state.

BN component parties - MCA and Gerakan - both opposed the bill.

MCA vice-president Chew Mei Fun said she deplored the the motion because there was no consensus among the BN component parties on the implementation of hudud until now.

Hannah, meanwhile, said she was in a dilemma because she would be blamed no matter what she decided.

“If I do not accept this proposal, Umno will say I am anti-Islam. Had I received it, MCA will say I am playing around with hudud. What would you do if you become me?” she asked reporters with a smile.

The bill has subsequently been withdrawn .
