The concession for the construction and maintenance of the Pasir Gudang campus of Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) was given to a company linked to an Umno state assemblyperson in Penang, PKR’s Rafizi Ramli alleged today.

Rafizi (left in photo) revealed that the concession for the campus was awarded to a Selangor-based company, where the assemblyperson holds 20 percent of the shares, according to documents obtained from the Companies Commission of Malaysia (CCM).

"The company's financial statement says that the position of the assets are almost RM6 million but the annual income is only RM150,000," he said.

Malaysiakini has contacted the said assemblyperson for a response, and is withholding his and the company's names in the meantime.

“The company’s background shows that it does not have a strong financial standing nor extensive experience in the construction industry,” Rafizi said.

Rafizi also alleged that the concessionaires for all other five new UiTM campuses were linked to Umno members, and thus questioned if this company had obtained the concession for the same reason.

Rafizi revealed last week that the government is paying RM 8.6 billion in total to all six concessionaires after privatising the construction of the new campuses, which would have only cost RM1.8 billion if the government had built these on its own.
