Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin today said that "various quarters" are taking advantage of Muslim disunity to threaten the position of Islam in the country.

 

Muhyiddin (left) also cited as examples the “questioning” of the religion of the federation and syariah court powers, Bernama reported.  

It reported him as saying that such disunity comes from disagreements over religion among Muslims.

“Of late, pressures are mounting from various quarters who have questioned the position of Islam as the official religion of the federation and the implementation of laws by the syariah court," he is quoted by the national newswire as saying.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Jamil Khir Baharom recently came under fire for telling Parliament that Malaysia is not a secular state.

There has also been heated discussions among experts on the status of the syariah court, following conflicting custody orders between the syariah and civil courts.

Meanwhile, Muhyiddin also said that unity among Muslims should also be prioritised so as to to not plunge the country into chaos.

He said that Islamic countries like Libya, Syria, Iraq and Egypt were weakened by conflict and civil war, causing poverty.

Speaking at a breaking of fast even in Malacca, he said this is in contrast to Malaysia where Muslims live in harmony and enjoy economic progress and political stability.
