Look who's talking about leadership
YOURSAY ‘Najib seems to be more voluble when it comes to football.’
Najib: Brazil's defeat shows leadership is key
Aries46: This is a lesson on the perils of failed leadership by none other than PM Najib Razak himself. Is this what is called an 'irony'?
Brazil was dissected by the clinical Germans in the World Cup semi-finals and fell by the wayside. Malaysia on the other hand, is being divided and destabilised on a regular basis under Najib’s leadership, or lack of it, which Malaysians notoriously describe as ‘rudderless’ or other more familiar terms such as 'autopilot’.
On one hand, we have a conflict between the civil and syariah courts which derails and denies the due process of law. The enforcement authorities and the attorney-general seem unsure of their role with one leg in both outfits.
We are bombarded with race and religion mongering by extremist groups with a free hand to disparage and threaten the minorities at will.
We have ever rising cost of living contributed largely by lax financial controls and the excesses of the powerful and their cronies. And most recently, a caution by DPM Muhyiddin Yassin not to discount the possibility of another May 13.
Are we headed the way of Brazil, Mr PM?
Ratbatblue: Indeed, look who's talking. Najib seems to be more voluble when it comes to football. We have often wished he showed the same when it came to matters of national interest.
In fact, there are so many such matters, he may not even know where to start after having left it for so long. Especially matters which were potentially dangerous to the stability of the nation.
No warnings to extremist groups to shut up, unchecked political bickering, rampant corruption, no comment on implementation of laws not suitable for a large section of population...
He has his hands full and yet he chose to comment on leadership using football as an analogy. I am speechless.
P Dev Anand Pillai: Dear PM, what has the World Cup got to do with governing Malaysia? Brazil's captain was serving his punishment which explained his absence in the semi-final, but here you are the captain who doesn't seem to be bothered about what your crew members are saying or doing?
How on earth would you expect the passengers to be feel safe in the plane that you are piloting?
Abasir: "...imagine what can happen to a country without leadership, vision, and a commitment to strive for the rakyat's fate," said Najib.
Malaysians don't have to imagine that. They can see it all around them everyday. The homeless, the corruption, the constants threats by state-sponsored thugs and continual warnings of impending riots.
Hafidz Baharom: I don't have to imagine a country without leadership. I just read the newspapers and there you go, no leadership.
Chris Wong: For once, I agree with Najib. He is trying to apologise for his own lack of leadership in governing Malaysia, and draws our attention to his poor handling of important decisions as PM of Malaysia.
But apology not accepted.
NuckinFuts: Najib is trying to say the Brazilians did poorly because they (like Malaysia) have a 'spineless' leader. (Sorry to Brazil’s forward Neymar).
NewMalaysia: Just how much our national debt has risen since Najib took over the PM’s and finance minister’s post? It's even worse than the seven goals Brazil conceded to Germany, so how dare he talk about lousy leadership?
For me, Brazil failed because of the players’ 'arrogance' and 'over confidence', that is what I am also seeing from BN under Najib’s leadership. When Brazil conceded the first goal, it’s just like what Najib has done with our national debt, conceding a substantial amount of debt.
Yet Brazil didn't sort out their defence, they went on the attack, and before they could score their consolation goal, they conceded another six goals.
I see Najib going the same route - before sorting out the debt with prudence spending, he goes on a spending spree hoping to score a goal back, but before you realise it, the RM600 billion debt with five percent interest will easily cost you RM30 billion.
With Najib and BN, I wouldn’t be surprised if Malaysia end up a disastrous 0-10. So, it’s better to change the players before the time is up.
Clearwater: Didn’t Najib pick England, Spain and Brazil to win earlier on? All have suffered the Najib curse, with Brazil suffering the worst defeat in its history. Therefore, please don't talk about national leadership, in fact, don't open your mouth at all.
Bamboo: A PM devoid of leadership talking about leadership. With a minority mandate in GE13, his silent fanning of racist and religious fires by the likes of Malay rights group Perkasa, Ikatan Muslimin Malaysia (Isma), Jalur Tiga Malaysia (Jati), Umno-owed Utusan Malaysia reflects the total lack of leadership from him.
Or is the silent condoning of such acts to preserve Umno's power by divide and rule? Both ways, Malaysia will sink into oblivion on the world stage.
Hang Babeuf: "We will be like Brazil football team if there is no leadership," says Najib.
Brazil had a team of brilliant individual players but lacked adequate leadership. Malaysia lacks adequate leadership, while Najib's team has no brilliant individual players.
Apart from that “minor” difference, Najib’s rumination may be a fair and apposite comment.
Casey: "Effective leadership is not about making speeches or being liked; leadership is defined by results not attributes," said Peter Drucker.
Najib, please hold yourself responsible for a higher standard than that expected of you by your servile cabinet colleagues and party sycophants.
Never excuse yourself as you're the prime minister of Malaysia, not just the president of Umno. For Umno's selfish interest is inconsequential in the context of national interest.
