YOURSAY ‘You mean Roketkini won't feature less 'attractive' members?’

DAP features another ‘awek cun’ in its fold

CQ Muar: DAP must not be seen as political beauty pageant enrollment campaign, but a launching pad for young aspirants of all races and gender to dispel those negative allegations hurled at them as "communistic" in ideology.

With those bright and moderate Malays in mind who are potential leaders, but are reluctant to step forward for various reasons, DAP is certainly moving towards the right direction with this strategic move as a democratic party in a multiracial society.

MW: I voted DAP but I disagree with the slant and positioning of these members. Focus on them as Malaysians, not their looks or their race. You mean Roketkini won't feature less 'attractive' members?

Cantabrigian: DAP should be more careful in playing with such gender-based appeal as it may get a backlash unnecessarily. Young and beautiful Young Syefura Othman may be, but let's focus more on contributions and efforts, shall we?

A.A.: In the context here, which is a woman joining the DAP, any reference to her look may be regarded as sexist.

When Ariff Sabri Abdul Aziz and Zairil Khir Johari joined DAP, I doubt that there was any Roketkini headline saying that the new members were "handsome hunks."

If "awek cun" is really equivalent to "hot chick" then it sounds downright sexist. I wonder then why DAP used the term to introduce its new member of the party.

Tomorrow, we may see BN supporters using this as a bullet to shoot at DAP.

SusahKes: Awek cun? Give me a break - stop labeling women as ‘cun’ or ‘hotties’. What difference is there from what MCA did when they invited supermodel wannabes to their AGM about two years ago?

Keep at it and you might as well use Robin Thicke's ‘Blurred Lines’ as party song.

CHKS: I agree with some of the comments above by Malaysiakini commenters. Though the intention of DAP in showcasing some of its new ‘cun’ members is good, please don't give the impression that indirectly, DAP only promotes ‘cun’ members.

All are welcome, regardless of race, religion... and shape! Please.

Odin: My Malay is hopeless, but I don't think 'hot chick' is the correct translation of 'awek cun'.

It seems to me that 'cun' is used of something or someone that is attractive, desirable or perfect - all in a positive sense.

'Hot', when associated with women, suggests something not too nice about them, like being frisky and 'easy'.

Odysseus: It's good that DAP is using faces of other races to reflect their multiracial membership composition.

It will be good if they can also show ‘cun’ guys and gals from other races as well, including our brethren from East Malaysia.

Chiabee2: Bravo DAP. Young Malays are better informed now and are disgusted with the corrupt ways and extreme type of Islam as propagated by Umno.

This wind of change would have gained a much stronger momentum by now if not for those dumb voters of Teluk Intan.

Nevertheless, it is never too late and Pakatan Rakyat and not DAP alone will do well to have more Dyana Sofya Mohd Dauds to hasten this wind of change.

Rakyatfirst: This country will only have future when things are not judged by a person's race and religion.

It is difficult, but why can't we take lead and be an example to the world? It is time that BN wake up and changes its mindset.

There is nothing great to be born a Chinese, Malay or Indian. More important is that you are born human.

Mohgui: Hmmm... my guess is, we will be soon seeing sexy pictures of Young Syefura circulating.

Prudent: I have a feeling that exploiting women may end badly for the DAP as with any one or group who/which exploit women. But the consumer products companies seem to be getting away with it so far...

Roketkini says sorry for using 'awek cun'

Kilgore: The Roketkini article is simply juvenile and low-brow politicking. DAP should be better than that.

The move to bring in more young, intelligent talent and create a more gender balanced, multiracial party is commendable.

But to sell these new politicians as 'sexy babes' is insulting to women and the general public. The DAP needs to rise above the muck and treat all people with respect, not manipulate them like fools.

Dappy: There is nothing wrong for us to catchy phrases to attract the people's attention. It’s good to have more young people joining DAP’s stable.

Anonymous #20513663: Thank you, Roketkini , for doing the right thing. Overall, however, the DAP still needs to work on its image as being friendly to women. It is still a very macho party.

In fact, all political parties in Malaysia have this same problem. The very fact that there are separate women's wings says that there is a problem. Just as the separate 'non-Muslim' wing in PAS says that there is a problem there for them.

Be careful not to reproduce the BN model with division along gender lines (instead of 'racial' lines).
