YOURSAY ‘In Malaysia, it is always a case of selective prosecution.’
Utusan: S'pore protects Islam better than M'sia
Norman Fernandez: Singapore does not protect Islam. Singapore protects all religions. Any insult by anyone against any religion is dealt with swiftly and the appropriate punishment meted out.
In contrast, in Malaysia it is always a case of selective prosecution. In Singapore, those from Isma or Perkasa would be behind bars and the keys thrown away.
Ksn: It is strange for Utusan Malaysia to praise Singapore. But Singapore does not discriminate anybody based on religion and race. They follow the law and apply them fairly, without exception.
Now with Utusan giving Singapore the thumbs up, perhaps Malaysia too will do likewise - enforce the law without race and religion coming into the picture.
ChaSL: Utusan won't last even a day if it were to operate under Singapore's law. Its whole editorial staff would be charged under Singapore's Sedition Act and locked up in jail in no time.
The Singapore government values racial harmony and peace far more than our BN government, which only knows how to prosecute selectively and perpetuate racial tension in order to divide and rule.
J Ng: Utusan is so fortunate that Malaysian authorities are not as swift and efficient in taking action, compared with their Singapore counterparts.
If they are, then Utusan would have been charged many times over for dissemination of racial and religious hatred. Editors such as Awang Selamat would have been in jail long ago.
Basically: Utusan , it’s because Singapore has a strict policy. No one, absolutely no one - not Chinese, not Malay, nor Indian - is tolerated when he or she makes disparaging comments about religion.
Let's see how many times Utusan and Umno and their NGOs have made disparaging comments about other races/religions.
Proarte: Mosques in Singapore have to adhere to strict guidelines on the use of loudspeakers for azan prayers.
In the central business district and urban areas, azan prayers through loudspeakers are not allowed. The volume of azan prayers through loudspeakers in outlying areas is strictly regulated.
No one is Singapore has one’s sleep disturbed by inconsiderate mosque authorities because there is rule of law in Singapore.
The truth is Kelvin Yip would not have been provoked into venting his anger on Facebook if he lived near a mosque in Singapore.
Lawyer slams politicking over Karpal’s driver case
David Dass: The late Karpal Singh’s driver S Selvam needs legal assistance wherever it comes from.
It may be unrealistic to expect Karpal's family to assist him. But every accused needs legal representation. There is the presumption of innocence. And he may ultimately be found not to be guilty of dangerous and reckless driving.
The issue of who helps him or who should help him should not be politicised. If Gerakan wants to help him, that is fine. But do it because you are concerned about justice. Not because you want to score points against the DAP.
Dr Suresh Kumar: I don't think anyone is asking for Selvam to be exonerated.
No doubt the trial has to go on, we are only talking about a mere RM5,000 bail amount that Selvam can't afford. What is so wrong about someone trying to help him raise the money?
DAP did not do it hence the politicians are now trying to score brownie points. As I said earlier, contributory factors like being overworked, fatigue, lethargy, alcohol and drug intake should also be taken into consideration.
So let the trial go on, but meanwhile Selvam is innocent until proven guilty. Those who want to help him post the bail should do so merely on humanitarian grounds and not for political expediency.
Anonymous_3f4b: The least Karpal's family could do was to expeditiously engage a lawyer to defend Selvam.
As defence lawyers themselves, they are well aware of the adage that a man is innocent until proven guilty by the due process of law.
The late Karpal would have no hesitation to defend Selvam but sadly, this is not the case with his sons, even though imbued with political positions and strength.
Negarawan: MCA publicity bureau deputy chairperson Marco Yap took a jab at DAP saying, "If DAP can abandon Karpal’s loyal but lowly driver, think how DAP will fail you."
This is a malicious statement by MCA, calculated not only to damage DAP's reputation but also to hurt Karpal's family.
By this statement, MCA is not only doing a disservice to the Chinese community but also causing them great embarrassment. As lawyer Malik Imtiaz rightly pointed out, stop politicising this issue.
