Prominent rights and Islamic NGOs have called for the immediate resignation of party-less Selangor Menteri Besar Abdul Khalid Ibrahim. 

 

“Any head of government upon losing the confidence of his party should just gracefully bow out.  Khalid should just resign honourably,” the group of NGOs said in a statement today. 

“As Selangor is not a presidential democracy, Khalid has no direct and personal mandate.

"By not only  clinging on to power, but further announcing the sacking of (five) executive councillors from PKR and DAP, Khalid Ibrahim has doubly denounced democracy and betrayed the electorate.”

 

The NGOs, which include Pertubuhan IKRAM Malaysia (Ikram), Suaram, Pusat Komunikasi Masyarakat (Komas) and Saya Anak Bangsa Malaysia (SABM), released a statement today on the ongoing Selangor crisis. 

 

They further accused Khalid of abusing his power as MB as well as taking advantage of the sultan’s mandate in the sacking of the PKR exco members. 

 

“Khalid Ibrahim now has also demonstrated his utter contempt for His Royal Highness Sultan of Selangor in his announcement of the sacking of the exco (members), by usurping His Royal Highness’ power in terminating the service of exco (members).”

PAS and Khalid can't stand on their own

 

The group also shot down the statement made by state PAS exco member Sallehen Mukhyi, stating PAS is not collaborating with Umno to back Khalid, as PAS only commands 15 of the 56 member legislative assembly.

 

“A government supported by only 16 members is not tenable. To present that as a majority government would have been misleading.”

 

The Selangor MB crisis was exacerbated when Khalid was sacked as PKR member on Saturday, upon his failure to relinquish his post as MB. 

 

Khalid yesterday sacked five PKR and DAP exco members - Elizabeth Wong, Daroyah Alwi, Teng Chang Khim, V Ganabatirau and Ean Yong Hian Wah – for allegedly “forming a bloc to undermine the exco”.

Khalid on Monday met with the Selangor sultan, who consented to him staying on as MB.

The palace also issued a letter yesterday assenting to the sacking of the five exco members.
