What were PAS' motives in naming Azmin?
YOURSAY 'Was it to save just to face or bring Pakatan to its knees?'
PAS backs Wan Azizah, Azmin for MB post
Changeagent
: PAS has definitely thrown in PKR deputy president Azmin Ali's name into the mix to upset the apple cart, when they know full well that PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail already has unanimous support from PKR and DAP to be the MB-designate.
I am very doubtful of their commitment to the Pakatan pact and cause. I do believe that they have been cornered into today's decision by the two PAS assemblypersons who had already declared their unwavering support for Wan Azizah.
This has been the real game changer. Whatever PAS' central committee decides, she has already garnered enough support to form the next government. Had this not happened, PAS' collective decision might have been very different. Who knows what could've been?
Kheng: In my opinion, it doesn't matter who is MB ultimately. During this critical period where losing the state is a high probability given a recalcitrant MB who is hell bent on the Pakatan state government and handing it on a silver platter to Umno/BN, I welcome PAS decision to stand with PKR and DAP.
Most importantly, I hope everyone involved in this episode learnt something from it.
Kim Quek: Congratulations to Mat Sabu and his like-minded colleagues for having ensured that rationality prevails and the values and principles shared by Pakatan be upheld over parochial considerations.
It is hoped that after this potentially fatal turmoil, Pakatan will move forward with greater unity of purpose to fulfil its promises to the people of this country.
Cry, my beloved country: PAS, you only need to make known whether you support PKR's appointment or Khalid Ibrahim as MB. You are not at liberty to propose anyone else from PKR.
Aries46: After having brought Pakatan to its knees enacting its master’s script, PAS finely went into its central committee meeting this morning with nothing more than Hobson’s choice - swim along with Pakatan or sink to oblivion with its new-found masters.
So the late announcement that they were back in the Pakatan fold was a foregone conclusion.
And the new twist of naming Azmin as a second candidate to Wan Azizah may be nothing more than a face saving measure more for its president than anything else.
PKR must come to an amicable agreement with Azmin as Wan Azizah has a proven majority and most of all, managed to turn the tables on PAS, Khalid and their scriptwriters.
Though Azmin is the most deserving of the lot based on his loyalty, the peoples' choice appears to be for Wan Azizah, also for her unwavering trust and loyalty. Those who object to her nomination have yet to give a single valid reason for it.
Abasir: Before everyone heaves a sigh of relief, I would say hold your breath. It ain't over yet. Nominating two when only one was required says that the PAS Politburo is still up to mischief, still wanting to load the dice. And this coming after a week of playing poker and releasing trial balloons, shows that this is a disgruntled lot with several irons in the fire.
If Azmin is truly above board in all ways and not a "Cassius with a mean and hungry look", he should politely and without delay, thank PAS graciously, turn down the unsolicited nomination and throw his weight behind the party's choice. But that requires leadership and absolute integrity.
LIEW LEAN KUT: I feel that Pakatan should stick to its original candidate, that is Wan Azizah, by virtue she is the president and she had for umpteen years stick by PKR when Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim was in jail.
Pakatan can trust her more not to sell off to Umno. Selangor MB Khalid Ibrahim and Azmin are former Umno members, Pakatan tried Khalid and you see what happened, he tried to sell out to Umno, luckily the two PAS members stuck to PKR, if not, PAS would have joined Umno to take over Selangor.
Now that Plan A is toppled, PAS is recommending Azmin to be included as a candidate for the sultan to choose, the sultan will surely chose Azmin as he is easier to be persuaded to toe the Umno line.
I have nothing against Azmin but after the Khalid episode, please do not take the risk. I say stick to your original decision, Wan Azizah for MB.
Ohtedah: PAS could have easily resolved this issue today by supporting Wan Azizah. Instead PAS decided to name the top two PKR leaders.
Now the supporters for both will scramble to get their person to be in that position. This may be a compromise stand between the two factions in PAS. But why make your problem everyone's problem too? It was a very sneaky move.
Bash: If PAS is a good and honourable party it should just decide that they stand by PKR's decision without conditions to avoid complications later on. Can PAS speak plainly and with conviction to the partnership?
With due respect to all, Khalid should advise the Selangor sultan and not the other way around. The sultan can then decide. So now one wonders what advice is Khalid going to present. To be honest, his position is now untenable.
Maplesyrup: I am not agreeable to Azmin becoming MB of Selangor. With two key issues namely Langat 2 and Kidex, we really need a MB who is totally immune to money politics. I am more comfortable with Wan Azizah for MB. By insisting on Azmin, PAS is attempting to derail Wan Azizah's bid for the MB’s post.
Unspin: Leaving aside positive or negative perceptions about Azmin, it is important that we select younger leaders because they have the natural energy, stamina and drive to achieve our objectives.
Azmin is 49 years’ old. Azizah is 61. Anwar (probably adviser to Azizah if she becomes MB) is 67. Khalid is 67. Based on age factor, Azmin should make a better MB. As a comparison, Obama was 47 when he became President of USA. David Cameron was 43 when he became Prime Minister of the UK.
Homesick: What kind of nonsense is this? PAS has not solved any problem by naming Azmin as MB as well. My take is that the moderates supported Wan Azizah and the Ayatollahs don’t. So they compromised.
I still think Pakatan is better off without PAS. Pakatan should give PAS an ultimatum i.e. agree with our choice of MB or leave. PAS needs Pakatan more than Pakatan needs PAS, and PAS knows it.
Hearty Malaysian: It is political ‘save face’. PAS back two candidates, withdraws support for Khalid, PKR make the decision on either of the two.
The final decision is with PKR as PAS does not reject Wan Azizah now. Damage control mode now after procrastination by PAS, Khalid now has to see sultan to resign, he has no choice but to accept the reality, Khalid is no more having the majority support.
Resign, Khalid, you are history, we shall remember you for this episode. Shame.
DONE: Why need to add another warlock into the mess? Can’t settle it impeccably? Next time when Kelantan picks a MB, DAP and PKR please announce you have other names in mind too.
Not Smart: It is noted that this important and long awaited announcement is made by the PAS deputy president. Where is the president, who was very adamant from the onset of the crisis? Did he not attend the meeting or had he abstained from making a decision?
Has he lost his popularity within the party over this issue or the earlier decision was based on his or external 3rd parties 'influence'?
Rick Teo: Khalid, in one desperate act, will dissolve the assembly and allow Umno another bite at the cherry.
