Will Khalid dissolve the state assembly?

YOURSAY 'If there’s no ulterior motive, why is he seeking to meet sultan urgently?'

Sultan to Khalid: No need to meet me overseas

Spinnot: By convention in other democracies, if the state CEO ceases to command the confidence of the majority of the legislative assembly, he shall resign and the head of state shall appoint another member of the legislative assembly who in his judgement is likely to command the confidence of majority of House to be the new state CEO.

Let's see whether ‘best democracy’ Malaysia follows this democratic convention.

Isana: There are nine more days before the sultan arrives home. In fact at this moment, 24 hours is too long in politics. Anything can happen with this rogue and illegal MB hanging on tightly to his post.

The coast is still not clear for Pakatan Rakyat in Selangor. Khalid has a stubborn and vengeful character, so if he is going down he will try to pull everyone down with him. Be careful, Pakatan.

Hyc96: When the state has no legitimate head, do we have to wait a "few more days" for a decision to be made by a supposedly symbolic figure?

Furthermore, there are many other ways to communicate apart from the face-to-face discussion.

Kang Kong King: If Khalid doesn't have an ulterior motive, why is he seeking to meet the sultan urgently? If only to resign, then all he needs to do is just send a letter to the palace, and they will inform the sultan, who is overseas, on the latest development.

Khalid is not about to give up. PAS has got to swallow a bitter pill as the person whom they had backed up till Sunday is turning against them and looks likely to be using the sultan to dissolve the Dewan.

PAS may prove to be the biggest loser along with Pakatan. That's why you have to be decisive and be supportive of your coalition partners.

Vijay47: Reading Article 53 of the Selangor constitution and even taking into account paragraph 4, there is nothing that provides for the rejection as menteri besar of a member who may be of the feminine gender.

But paragraph 6 seems troublesome - now that Khalid no longer commands the confidence of the majority, what is there to stop him from requesting His Highness to dissolve the legislative assembly? After all, paragraph 6 seems to permit this.

That is, leaving aside the question of honour and justice, etc.

FairMind: No way can Khalid call for snap election just because there is a change of MB while Pakatan is firmly in the majority and control. It's absurd.

If there is a snap election whenever there is a change of head, there would be a snap election in Terengganu when former MB Ahmad Said was replaced and a general election in Malaysia when former PM Abdullah Badawi was replaced by Najib Razak.

Anonymous_3f6d: We cannot and must not have snap elections in Selangor merely because of a shameless, arrogant and unwanted MB.

Raja Chulan: There is no basis to dissolve the state legislative in the present scenario. One side has 43 seats, a clear majority and the leader of this side has to be made the MB. The sultan and MB do not have discretion when there is 'no hung' situation.

Dissolving the state legislative under this situation will amount to hijacking or frustrating democracy and the will of the majority rakyat. Also, denying the appointment of  PKR chief Wan Azizah Wan Ismail as MB will be against the spirit of democracy and the federal and state constitutions.

If the sultan refuses the rakyat's choice, he'd better have a very good and valid reason.

Sleepy: If there is a snap election, would BN become the next state government? I don't think so now that PAS is with Pakatan.

BN can expect a smaller or a bigger majority, either way Pakatan will still form the state government. Conclusion: it is going to be a waste of money and time, unless we are expecting to see 'frogs'.

Ferdtan: If Khalid dissolves the state assembly to hold fresh polls, we shall make him regret that traitorous act for the rest of his life. When we see him, we shall spit into the ground as though he has fouled the air we breathe in. This is to show what a filthy creature he has become.

Over50ABU: Khalid thinks he has the backing of the sultan and Umno, which makes him arrogant to the core. He is trying to mislead the whole democratic process to his advantage.

Korkor: Khalid, the most honourable thing for you to do now is to resign immediately and pass the baton to Wan Azizah. Why the need to meet the sultan?

Everything will fall into place the moment you resign and hopefully all state documents remain intact, unlike the former MB Mohd Khir Toyo who stripped the MB's office bare.

Quigonbond: It will be an affront to the vast majority of Selangorians if the sultan proceeds to dissolve the assembly.

It would be better for the sultan to advise Khalid to request from him an emergency assembly session so that (1) Perak precedent, which is a bad precedent, can be avoided, and (2) for the sake of Selangorians they get a new MB as soon as possible.
