Ulama at pains to explain stand in muktamar

YOURSAY ‘Respect is what people give to you, shame is what you earn for yourselves.’

Haron Din wants ties with Pakatan reviewed

Quigonbond: I think PM Najib Abdul Razak has done a remarkable job as Umno president this round. Keeping quiet and letting Pakatan Rakyat self-destruct, the federal government and their cronies are likely to secure and implement a biased, bad-for-the-people water deal from turncoat Selangor MB Khalid Ibrahim.

The way I see this, and all that is reported of the PAS meeting, the ulamas still hold sway. It means there will never be an ouster of its president Abdul Hadi Awang, and unity with Umno will always still be on the PAS agenda, and that means Pakatan will not be able to do any better (and in fact, will do worse, especially PAS) in the 14th general election.

That's probably why Dr Mahathir Mohamad has stepped up his attack on Najib because the window for his faction to take charge is closing.

And who do we have to thank? The Umno faction which has been pushing for reunification with PAS.

It begs the question whether Muhyiddin Yassin is the recalcitrant deputy prime minister, or he's really Najib's secret weapon, creating an appearance of disunity, the big red herring.

Malaccan: PAS deputy spiritual leader Haron Din, along with the late Harun Taib and other senior ulamas have always been uneasy that PAS did not have ascendency over Pakatan and that the ulamas' influence had been limited while they are in Pakatan.

Party spiritual leader Nik Aziz Nik Mat is obviously stepping back due to age and health, and with the passing of Harun Taib, Haron Din is seeing an opportunity to assert himself and reclaim for himself and the ulama class greater powers.

In this, he has the support of Hadi and other ulamas in executive positions such as Kelantan MB Ahmad Yaakob, Nasrudin Hassan and Nik Abduh Nik Aziz.

It is ingenious to claim that PAS is slandered as the betrayal was in fact committed openly by Hadi and the syura council in the Selangor menteri besar case. And there has been no shortage of tit-for-tats from PAS as well.

It is hilariously ironic for Haron Din to claim it was the clerics who repaired frayed ties with Pakatan when they initiated the recent breach. Has he forgotten who put an extra candidate in Kota Damansara as well?

Let PAS decide its own course and destiny, but let it stop denying its actions.

MinahBulat: "When conditions are breached, the ulama have to consistently repair them. If it’s beyond repair, just take the concept of divorce in marriage," said Haron Din.

This ulama is try to give the impression that it is Pakatan that breached the condition, forcing the ulama to repair them. Hello, PAS, it is you who broke the pact.

Martin Gilbert: Yes, ustaz Haron, this ‘tahalluf siyasi’ (political cooperation) with Pakatan is no good. ‘Tahalluf siyasi’ with Umno is much better.

This kind of talk really makes me want to puke. Please, look inside yourself and ask whether or not all this time, you've not actually been a fraud?

Do some soul searching. You have ‘darul shifaq’ and tell us to drink holy water for our ailments but when your blood pressure goes up, the first thing you do is to run to the National Heart Institute (IJN).

J Ng: How principled can one be when he or she cannot even keep promises made and be a reliable partner? There is nothing the ulama can repair.

As an Umno minister has said, “PAS is not God.” As such, the urging by its deputy chief Mohamad Sabu, better known as Mat Sabu, that its cleric leadership reinvent itself is most appropriate.

Until and unless this 'reinvention' happens, PAS is not a right partner for Pakatan. It will never be a party that can govern fairly and progressively. A multi-racial and multi-religious country like Malaysia will be unwise to have PAS helming the government.

Swot Strategist: There are always good and bad members in PAS. Good are those who promoted noble universal values with multi-racial vision, gender equality, fairness, integrity and competency.

Alas! Many leaders in PAS are self-centred, with top leaders being infiltrated with narrow mindedness, unfaithfulness and acting as religious bigots promoting a similar agenda to the ruling regime, the 4Rs - race, religion, royalty and rural sentiments.

Respect and fight for the constitution, fear your Almighty but do not fear unscrupulous leaders, royals or any individuals if they are doing the wrong thing. Act just and be upright.

Ideally, the Pakatan leadership must act fast to strategise and help each of its components; be it PAS, DAP or PKR; to cleanse off those bad leaders within each party and without it leaving the coalition.

Keturunan Malaysia: PAS, after all that is said and done, your relationship with Pakatan is seemingly only for your own selfish vested interest. Mutual interest is something you despicably tolerated.

Haron Din, respect is what people give to you, shame is what you earn for yourselves.
