A PAS parliamentarian today called on the government and relevant authorities to stop allowing promotional posters of a famous beer festival that takes place between September to October each year.

Temerloh MP Nasruddin Hassan said in a Facebook post Carlsberg Malaysia should no longer be allowed to promote their Oktoberfest festival, modelled after the famous German beer festival that takes place concurrently in Europe.

"I don't deny the right for alcohol to be consumed by those whose religion allows them to do so," he said.

"But in a country where Islam is the religion of the federation, that right should be exercised quietly and not be promoted, let alone celebrated so hugely," he added.

Likening it to pre-marital sex and prostitution, he said such promotions, even if the event takes place behind closed doors, challenged Islamic sensitivity.

"It becomes an open sin when it is promoted to the public, so the onus is on the authorities and all of Islam to rise up against this," he said.

He said all Islamic departments in the country must take immediate action.
