Right wing NGO Ikatan Muslimin (Isma) and Umno have joined the bandwagon to oppose liberal Indonesian Islamic leader Ulil Abshar Abdalla's participation in an event in Kuala Lumpur next week.

Agreeing with Persatuan Ulama Malaysia (PUM), Isma president Abdullah Zaik Abd Rahman has urged the Islamic community to stop liberal Islamic teachings from entering the country.

Abdullah Zaik said that liberals are "taking advantage of challenges faced by Muslims to raise questions of faith".

"That is why foreign ideologies made by this liberal (Ulil Abshar, left ) should be opposed harshly,” he is quoted as saying by Isma’s mouthpiece, Ismaweb .

Meanwhile, Umno supreme council member Puad Zarkashi condemned the roundtable discussion with Ulil Abshar as it might jeopardise the faith of Muslims in Malaysia.

'LGBT supporter'

"Ulil Abshar is not just an extreme liberal but also a staunch supporter of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community. 

"He also supports the teachings of Ahmadiah, which has been deemed as a deviant cult by the Indonesian and Malaysian authorities," Puad said in a report by Utusan Malaysia .

He also slammed Global Movement of Moderates (GMM) chief executive officer Saifuddin Abdullah for bringing in Ulil Abshar to garner support from the youth.

"Even though, you want gain popularity and bring in new political ideologies among the younger generation, this is not the way.

"We are opening ourselves to those who want question our faith (in Islam)."

However, when contacted ,Saifuddin clarified that GMM is not the co-organiser, and that there was a "miscommunication" with organiser Islamic Renaissance Front (IRF), which usually uses GMM’s premises for events.
