Nancy’s defence of Ibrahim Ali ‘nonsensical’

YOURSAY ‘It is for a court to rule whether his statement is seditious.’

No action on Ibrahim Ali for Bible-burning threat

Anonymous #44199885: What a nonsensical statement from Minister in the PM’s Department Nancy Shukri.

Perkasa chief Ibrahim Ali is a public figure and head of an organisation that claims to represent Malays and Islam. His statements carry weight and influence and as such can cause severe consequences to our society.

His call for the burning of the Bible might have been taken up by certain members of the society and in fact his call sows anxiety among Christians.

It is for a court to rule whether his statement is seditious.

It is shocking to see the extraordinary lengths that the government is  going to protect and shield its supporters, while at the same time displaying extraordinary efficiency in charging all those who are seen to be opposed to it.

Anonymous_3e86: Can one burn down a church or a mosque with the excuse that it was done in defence of one's religion? Or is this excuse only applicable exclusively to one religion only?

Rojak: It is obvious that the fundamental problem with sedition is that no one knows what it is. And there is nothing more unjust than a law that is unclear.

If Nancy wants to salvage some shred of credibility, she needs to explain why making a satirical comedy video, calling Umno “celaka” or offering an opinion on constitutional law are seditious whereas calling for the burning of bibles or DAP offices is not.

It's not going to be easy, Nancy, but would you like to try to explain please? Or do you deserve all the negative comments you are getting now?

Anonymous_3e86: If the ‘threat’ to burn the bibles in defence of Islam is not a crime, does it imply that the ‘act’ of burning the Bible is also not a crime as long as it is done in defence of Islam or a religion?

Oh Ya?: This is really disgusting. Indeed, they are no different from Zimbabwe’s Robert Mugabe, North Korea’s Kim Jong-un and the Italian Mafia.

So long you are the ruling elite, you can empty the public coffers, refuse to obey court orders, are immune from law enforcement agencies and even commit murders with impunity.

Is this democracy? Is this rule of law? Is Bolehland qualified for developed country status? Is the ruling elite with such a mindset fit to rule?

Kawak: In the first place, the allegation of some non-Muslim youths were distributing the bibles outside a Malay school in Jelutong, Penang (which led to Ibrahim Ali issuing the call to burn bibles) was never proven nor was there anyone arrested or prosecuted in court.

The allegation was made just before the last general election to fire up sentiments to win votes. Just as social activist Marina Mahathir said, Perkasa is exempted from the Sedition Act. How true.

Not Confused: What a lame-brained excuse for not taking action. So it is okay to threaten Christians by burning their Bible? Who is to protect the sanctity of the Bible then?

This is just hypocrisy of the highest order and any government minister making such ridiculous statements should not only be ashamed of herself, but should resign immediately.

Muslims can seize bibles, confiscate them for long periods of time and no action is taken against the perpetrators.

I wonder what would happen if the same threat was made against the Quran? Protestors would be out on the streets threatening death and destruction.

Hank Marvin: It looks like Nancy is not competent to take on the cabinet portfolio dealing with law.

We may not agree with Rafidah Aziz but her performance, inside and outside Parliament, deserved more respect.

Nancy is a disgrace to all; to Sarawak, to the legal profession and of course Umno-BN. She should be sacked immediately.

Swipenter: Nancy, so now can we go around threatening to burn the holy books of other religions in the name of defending the sanctity of our own religion?

Anonymous_3faa: Unbelievable! Such distorted and dishonest excuses to defend what was clearly an intention to create religious discord by an extremist.

So they can also decapitate anyone whom they feel has "offended" the sensitivity of Muslims? Aren't we heading towards an ISIS style scenario with such perverted thinking?

Uragt: This is the beginning of the end of a moderate Malaysia. PM Najib Razak, where art thou? Are you still jet setting around whilst the country is beginning to burn? Govern the country, please. Resign, if you cannot do it.

Gaji Buta: I grew up in a kampung, went to Malay school, even dated Malay girls, had numerous Malay friends and used to be treated like one of them in spite of being different race and religion.

Sure, they still wish to be my friends, but I don't see how I can be associated with Malay/Muslims much longer if this goes on.

They cannot be ignorant and expect a person to put up with all this nonsense and continue to act as though he is not affected. And vernacular schools have nothing to do with it.

Better for Nancy to say Ibrahim is above the law
