AG, your turn to explain ‘okay to burn Bibles’

YOURSAY ‘The more Nancy tries to explain, the more ridiculous it gets.’

Nancy: 'Burn Bible' speech based on constitution

Gerard Lourdesamy: Either Minister in the PM’s Department Nancy Shukri is plain stupid or attorney-general Abdul Gani Patail does not know the law.

Article 11(4) of the constitution allows for the restriction of the propagation of non-Muslim religions to Muslims. Both the federal and state governments can enact laws to restrict such propagation.

The constitution does not advocate or condone the burning of the holy books and scriptures of non-Muslim religions as a means to restrict the propagation of non-Muslim religions to Muslims.

In fact, the laws only permit a fine to be imposed on the offending non-Muslim party. Even if the use of the word ‘Allah’ by non-Muslims is prohibited by certain state enactments, that does not permit Muslims from advocating the burning of the holy books and scriptures of non-Muslim religions.

Ibrahim Ali's statement was clearly seditious because it had a seditious tendency under sections 3(1)(d) and (e) and 4(1)(a) and (b) of the Sedition Act.

RZC: Nancy is blaming the AG. I wish the AG will have some guts and issue a statement saying that Nancy is being facetious and dishonest. But never mind, the rakyat are doing his job for him.

MingXiang: No thanks to you Nancy, for planting into Perkasa chief Ibrahim Ali's head that he is above the law - that he is some sort of a Malay hero and a staunch defender of Islam.

He might now be emboldened to take things a step further and actually burn the Holy Bible. But frankly, I don't think he has the guts to do it, lucky for you.

WTFF: No need to beat around the bush. Don't think we are stupid fools. Suffice for us to know that the government practises selective prosecution because many of those who uttered harmless and very fair comments have been charged under the Sedition Act.

Nancy, we have lost all respect for you. According to your twisted logic, does it mean that it is perfectly legal for anyone to utter similar remarks purportedly in the defence of his or her religion?

Iiiizzzziiii: The more Nancy tried to explain, the more ridiculous it gets. She is only making a fool of herself, but I think the blame should not be solely on her. She is just carrying out the directive from the top.

Well, she has a choice - either to be a fool or to walk away with her dignity and integrity intact when she was asked to explain the AG’s decision in not charging Ibrahim.

It looks like she opted to be a fool, and so a fool she shall be to all Malaysians.

CiViC: The same Article 11, item (5) of the constitution under freedom of religion says: "This Article does not authorise any act contrary to any general law relating to public order, public health or morality."

WDA: Nancy, would you say Ibrahim Ali was protecting Islam and the constitution if he were to threaten you, a Muslim (I presume) for having a Christian-like first name?

I hope you see how absurd both your statements were.

Oh Ya?: Does she mean that the 3R (race, religion and royalty) as enshrined in the constitution must be protected at all costs, even to the extent of burning other holy books?

And that despite the constitution also says that freedom of religion is guaranteed, that clause is not worth the paper it is written on?

It is precisely this ‘Ketuanan’ mentality drummed in by Umno and its cohorts that is the cause of racial disunity and religion disharmony, not vernacular schools or the minority races.

Watchtower: The minister is not addressing the real issue.

1) The Sedition Act must be abolished, it is an unjust law.

2) If it remains for now, there should be no selective interpretation and persecution.

3) The fact that so many people are calling for Ibrahim Ali to face the law bear to the fact that many are disturbed by what he had said, that is what the law try to prevent (arousing ill-feeling that could lead to chaos).

Jiminy Qrikert: First, she said 'burn Bible' is a statement defending Islam and so there is nothing wrong uttering it. Now, it is 'based on the constitution' therefore absolutely legal.

I wonder what next from this imbecile Nancy Shukri - every Muslim is legally allowed to burn a Bible to prove they are good Muslims?

Sodom Me Sodom You: Nancy, please just shut your mouth and save yourself further embarrassment. As mentioned by former Bersih chief S Ambiga, it is much (much) more honourable for you to just resign. There is really no difference between you and Ibrahim Ali.

Peacemaker: There is an old saying among public relations professionals; better to get bad publicity than no publicity. Nancy binti Shukri must be a prolific public relations practitioner - one faux pas after another.

She's getting all the brickbats she so rightly deserved and earned.

Nicky: Ibrahim Ali should be asked to prove that the bibles were used to proselytise Muslims. If he has proof, charge the persons concerned. If not, he should be charged for lying and causing disharmony. So how can the authorities let this pass by like this?

Anonymous #20513663: Okay, so speculation was rife that the PM's Department has become bloated because ministries needed to be handed out as rewards to incompetent people.

According to this point of view all the 'real work' was being done in the PM's Department. But this minister is in the PM's Department, so are there any competent people left in this government?

Am I missing something? Who is running the country?

Casey919: Wow. Close to 200 curses in the Malaysiakini comment pages. Nancy, it’s not worth it at all. Think of your future generation too. Quit now.

Nancy digs herself an even deeper hole
