Welcome to Malaysia, a slavery heaven
YOURSAY 'When they're illegal they face extortion; when deported, the employers come out...'
Factory goes bust, 500 migrants abandoned
SSDhaliwal: This is slavery heaven and when the employers do not renew the permits of their workers, they will be illegal and subject to extortion from the enforcement officers if they get caught and do not pay up.
Having no legal recourse and no means to support themselves, they will eventually welcome deportation and the employers will come out of hiding, having saved hundreds of thousands of ringgit in unpaid salaries.
After that, maybe the unscrupulous employers will then start another business, having greased some hands, and the cycle will repeat.
Not Confused: Typically disgusting mentality of Malaysian companies. The integrity of company owners here is about as low as it can get.
I've heard of many similar stories where foreign workers are treated like garbage, not paid and then kicked out when the company is not doing well financially. No notice, no pay, no concern.
Malaysia is no better than some of the other Third World countries, like the ones that these hapless workers come from in the hope of bettering their lives.
P Dev Anand Pillai: Yes, the employer is guilty here. But what are the authorities doing? Where are the Human Resources Department, Immigration Department and police?
Just me: People like them should not get away with it. Even if they are bankrupt, even if they are going bankrupt, they would have known it months ago.
Not paying the workers is paramount to cheating. The bosses or directors should be jailed for life.
I propose that all companies employing foreigners need to contribute some money to a central fund, like the Employees Provident Fund (EPF).
If such a situation arises, the workers are first paid with this fund under the Human Resources Ministry and sent back home.
The ministry can then sue the directors and maybe even stop them from travelling overseas, like the Inland Revenue Department.
If they fail to pay up, we should either whip them or send them to jail. These are the people putting Malaysia to shame worldwide.
intheair: Average wage was about RM700 a month before minimum wage implementation. Now, it is RM900 per month. Every month, it's RM100,000 additional for 500 workers. Productivity stays the same.
All money wired home with zero benefits to our local community. Now, we have 500 penniless foreign workers to take care.
I am not siding with the employer, nor am I against minimum wage. I am just wondering out aloud why are we in such predicament.
Wg321: Even before the implementation of the goods and services tax (GST), employers are already facing hardship.
How can you expect those employers in the small and medium sized industries to survive after the implementation of GST?
More retrenchments will be expected next year. Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak is killing the goose that lays the golden egg.
Appum: Disgusting and cruel! Imagine yourself in their situation whereby, due to poverty, you are forced to seek employment in another country and end up this way!
Well, if one day Malaysia goes bankrupt, we may end up in the same boat, too. So this is no laughing matter.
YouAreNotAlone: Soon these poor souls will roam the country and rob whoever is unlucky, in order to just to stay alive.
Low bumi equity blamed on Najib's underlings
Baiyuensheng: Instead of encouraging the community to strive for meritocracy and to work hard, Deputy Agriculture and Agro-based Industries Minister Tajuddin Abdul Rahman is still preaching the concept of taking.
Seriously, are there no true leaders from the Malay community? I mean to take without even working hard - is it even halal?
Speaking sense: Tajuddin, it is easy to achieve 30 percent or 70 percent equity. The Malays just have to become like everyone else - work hard, be honest, have brains, persevere, work hard, be honest, have brains, persevere, work hard, be honest...
And yes, don't just sit back and depend on handouts, 10 percent commission and so on.
Hearty Malaysian: Enough of cooked-up figures and trumped-up blame for 'failures' to achieve 30 percent target. Look at how many rich Umnoputras are flaunting their riches!
Look at how much these rich Malays buy luxurious good with bundle of cash in the KLCC shopping centre. One wonders why these guys carry so much cash instead of using credit cards.
How can you justify giving special seven percent discount for a rich Malay to buy houses with price tags of more than a million ringgit and yet is still a cry baby?
hplooi: So when Khazanah starts to distribute national assets to 'bumiputera businessmen' (code for 'only close crony need apply'), how many more destructions of national assets will occur? And when that happens, will the non-bumiputera receive the short-end of the stick again?
Anonymous #03913649: Sack him first, Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak. This deputy minister is confirming former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad's allegations that you are an ineffective leader.
Next, whip the errant officers and you cannot find a better person than PM's wife Rosmah Mansor to do the job.
