A nationwide campaign in solidarity with PKR de-facto leader Anwar Ibrahim was launched by PKR Youth chief Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad today.

Anwar is facing a five year jail term following his  sodomy conviction in March.

Nik Nazmi said the campaign is themed `Rakyat hakimi negara' (People will judge the nation) and the nationwide 14 day countdown campaign would include flashmobs, leaflet distribution, nationwide ceramah and a drive on social media.

“Anwar will also talk at various venues nationwide. We will announce the venues soon,” he said, adding the pinnacle of the campaign would be held near the Palace of Justice in Putrajaya on Oct 28, where a mass ceramah is scheduled.

 

Nik Nazmi announced this at a press conference at the party headquarters in Petaling Jaya today.

 

Anwar's final sodomy appeal will be heard on Oct 28 and 29, at the Federal Court.

 

The opposition leader is appealing the conviction and sentence, while the prosecution is also cross-appealing, wanting a jail sentence of more than the five years' imposed.

 

When asked what would happen should Anwar be sent to jail, Nik Nazmi said the party is prepared to face any eventuality. "It would be an impetus for other issues faced by the people now,” he said.

 

He urged the people to come in droves on Oct 28 and 29, to show their solidarity with Anwar.

 

Anwar was acquitted by the Kuala Lumpur High Court in Jan 2012, of sodomising his former aide Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan.

 

The Court of Appeal allowed the prosecution's appeal after the case was brought forward from April to March this year and Anwar was sentenced to five years' jail.
