Wanita Gerakan has warned against calls for democracy, and said it supports preventive laws so that Malaysia remains "politically stable".

 

"Gerakan Wanita fully supports preventive laws, it is needed in order to preserve the political stability and to uphold our Federal Constitution and Rukun Negara," the women's wing chief Tan Lian Hoe at its party convention today.

 

"There is no need for us to follow the cries of democracy that in the end destroys ourselves," Tan said.

"Remember! There is no absolute democracy in the world. "We can't do something according to our own whims based on human rights.

"Democracy and human rights have limits and boundaries," she said.

Tan added that the rakyat must appreciate the government's purported new openess.

"The freedom given by the government should be respected and valued, and not to be challenged and trampled," she said.

Sowing seeds of hatred charge

Tan accused "traitors" of manipulating issues and sowing the seeds of hatred against the government for the opposition's political interest.

Further, she said, acts of provocation have also soured race relations in the country.

"We cannot do something following our whims based on human rights. Democracy and human rights have their limits and boundaries," she said.

She also accused the Pakatan Rakyat of courting the rakyat into playing with fire.

"The fire continues to burn because of their forked tongues. The rakyat's eyes continue to be clouded," she said.

However, Tan lamented that despite the opposition's misdeeds and hypocrisy in dealing with democracy and inability to arrest PAS' hudud ambitions, the rakyat still appear to give Pakatan a free ride.

"Their (opposition's) vile actions are legitimised and forgotten without any criticism or demands for explanation," she said.
