Two Johor DAP assemblypersons are crying foul over the state's policy which impose a quota on affordable housing which are reserved for BN political parties.

"This kind of distribution would not truly benefit the rakyat, but instead benefit their parties.

"It is another form of corruption, and allows certain parties to use it for political mileage," said Penggaram assemblyperson Gan Peck Cheng and Yong Peng assemblyperson Chew Peck Choo, in a joint statement today.

Both assemblypersons slammed the scheme as a ploy using a welfare programme to blackmail the people for political support.

 

Chew said members of the public had complained to her, after housing developers asked for the letter of endorsement when they applied for low-cost or affordable housing.

 

Upon seeking clarification with the state government, she said she received a letter dated Nov 5 from the office of the Johor exco member for housing and local government Abdul Latif Bandi, which was made available to the media.

 

The letter purportedly said, "Please be informed that a letter of endorsement from Johor assemblypersons are needed when applying for low-cost housing, medium-cost housing, and affordable housing in Johor that are under the quota of political parties, which are Umno, MCA and MIC.

 

"Nevertheless, a letter of endorsement is not required for the public quota that has been registered under the state secretariat’s housing department."

 

The purported letter was signed by Abdul Latif’s officer named Ahmad Fakhrul Ramli Abd Majid.

 

Malaysiakini has attempted to contact Abdul Latif but he could not be reached.

 

Gan added sources had told her that in each low-cost housing scheme, 30 units of it would be reserved for BN: 60 percent for Umno, 25 percent for MCA, and 15 percent for MIC.

 

The remainder, the sources said, would be distributed by the state government. However, if there are only 30 or fewer houses, all of it would be allocated between the three BN parties.

 

"I had heard of such things before, but now that we have it on paper, we and our colleagues will raise this in the state assembly and fight it to the end," Gan said.
