It is back to business for good samaritan Syed Azmi Alhabshi, who last month sparked a nationwide outcry when he organised an event ‘I Want To Touch A Dog’ to break the stigma of dogs among Malays.

Accused of being an apostate and threatened with physical violence by detractors has not seemed to stop the pharmacist from continuing on his social campaigns.

This time, he is on a mission to educate the masses on the concept of ‘free markets’ - only not the capitalistic type.

The free market that Syed Azmi and his friends are organising this Sunday in at Masjid Tun Abdul Aziz, Petaling Jaya is a market providing vegetables free of charge for the underprivileged or those simply anyone on tight budgets to enjoy.

Apart from vegetables, organisers also call on those interested in donating anything, including electronics, clothes and furniture, to bring their wares to the mosque from 10am to 1pm that day.

He recounted how at their previous free market organised near a low cost flat, a boy in the queue had gotten himself two ripe tomatoes.

“He turned to his mother and shouted. 'Mum, I got some tomatoes! We’ll have a dish tonight!'.

“I gave him something extra, as well. Tears,” Syed Azmi ( right ) wrote on his Facebook page in his usual candid manner.

The 'free market' concept is not entirely new in Malaysia.

Several groups have organised free markets throughout the Klang Valley that offer anything from clothes, to food, to massages free of charge, for anyone who wants it.

Some are specifically to help the underprivileged, while others are held to encourage recycling and to foster community building.

Meanwhile, Syed Azmi urged those interested to participate to contact him via Facebook.

“To those who are curious on what and how free markets operate, come and see me on the day itself at exactly 9.30am for a tour on how you can do one of your own,” he wrote.

“This small effort could hopefully help others as well. Please consider my plea.”
