YOURSAY ‘KJ, please be specific. Who questioned the special position of Malays?’

‘Non-Malays must remember their promise'

Continue-The-March: I hope the Oxford graduate can list out how and when non-Malay Malaysians have not abide to Article 153 of the constitution?

Article 153 states clearly the special position of the Malays, and not special rights of the Malays to discriminate against the non-Malay citizens. In the same breath, Article 153 states there must not be discrimination on grounds of race and creed.

However from 1970s, Umno Baru has abused this clause to help themselves through the ‘Never Ending Policy’ (NEP) in the pretext of helping the poor Malays. But why after 57 years of Umno Baru’s continuous rule, the Malays are still poor, insecure and easily feel threatened?

If anybody needs to take the blame, it is Umno Baru. The Umno Baru government alone is responsible for the mess we are in.

Umno Baru, why are you always blaming others for your own failure? Year in year out, the same old tune are rehash in your AGM (annual general meeting). Don’t you have any shame at all?

Gerard Lourdesamy: The Federal Constitution only provides for the special position of the Malays in Article 153 and not the supremacy of the Malays.

Similarly, Articles 3, 4 and 11 do not provide for the supremacy of Islam but only that it is the religion of the federation and it does not alter the basic structure of the constitution.

Article 152 safeguards the national language, Bahasa Malaysia, while allowing the use of mother-tongue languages in vernacular education.

Article 181 deals with the sovereignty of the Malay rulers and not their supremacy. While the institution of the Malay rulers ought to be respected, loyalty does not imply a servile attitude where there is abuse or misuse of power because the rulers are also bound by the constitution.

It is moronic of Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin to speak of equality as citizens but then issue a veiled threat to the non-Malays not to question the so-called "social contract". But who is questioning?

Fair Play: Gerard Lourdesamy, have you heard of this saying - “you see what you want to see and you hear what you want to hear”? And, let me add on this - “you believe what you want to believe”.

Now, we have a general understanding of the Umno psyche. So, even if you quote the Federal Constitution a zillion times, but to what avail? Herein lies the inherent 'disease' of the mind.

Khairy, ever wonder why your community would make very slow progress, if any, in today's highly competition global environment?

You are supposed to be amongst the brightest since you have a 'first-class' education from a prestigious overseas university. But sadly, a good education won't change anything unless you have the brainpower to boot.

As far as the other communities are concerned, the only social contract is the Federal Constitution that led to the formation of the nation. The rights of all communities, race, language, religion, special position of the major community and the royalty are enshrined in the constitution.

Therefore, the constant harping and reminding the other communities about the 'social contract' is nothing more than a figment of Umno imagination to perpetuate a myth. Other communities have already moved on. Join them or be left further behind.

AJ: It's clear that not everybody can imbue universal values with education. Khairy is certainly one of them. The Oxford degree is wasted on him.

Myrights: KJ, please be specific. Who questioned the special position of Malays, Malay language or the sovereignty of the royalty?

And, please be clear what special position of Malays, BM as national language and sovereignty of the royalty mean? Lay these out for all to see because it seems it is not documented anywhere.

Fact is, I read the news every day, and I have not seen anyone challenging these. What I have seen instead is Umno and their lackeys (Isma, Paerkasa) spewing hate messages, sowing fear and non-existent threats on the non-Malays all the time.

Pemerhati: Khairy and other Umno leaders constantly lie and talk of some non-existent social contract where some special favours were granted to the non-Malays.

They are following Nazi Germany’s Goebbels’s strategy of repeatedly telling a lie so that it comes to be believed as the truth. The only thing that can be called the social contract is the constitution.

Sali Tambap: Good of you, KJ. But remember your promise too. Lest you forget, perhaps you should open the pages of the book of our founding fathers, such as Tunku Abdul Rahman.

Tell that to Jais and Mais too. Affirm those temple and church owners that their houses of worship would not be arbitrary torn down, refused approval to build new ones or that their holy scriptures not confiscated or threatened with burning.

If everybody stick to the original social contract, everything should be fine. After all, everything was fine then, until your party tried to move the goal posts.

The promise of Malaysia is that everybody should enjoy the bounty of the nation and live in freedom. None should be suppressed in their way of life that they had when the nation was formed.

And that the rule of the Malay rulers is guaranteed, Islam is the official religion, Malay the national language and affirmative action implemented to help the Malays and natives to catch up with the others. So what has been the problem?

Look at the composition of government service, our universities and government agencies today. The difficulties of building new houses of worship and freedom of worship as how the respective religious adherents want to are well documented.

And the discrepancy in treating the natives too. So definitely there are people who have not kept their promises on how the country should be.

Anticonmen: This is a case of distracting the gullible Malays with imaginary enemies, away from all the looting and robbing behind the scenes.

Right on cue, non-Malay bashing in Umno meet
