Najib should respond in court of public opinion

YOURSAY 'This shows he is too weak to take on the young ones in Parliament.'

PM, wife to slap Rafizi with 'diamond rings' lawsuit

Bamboo: PKR vice-president Rafizi Ramli and DAP PJ Utara MP Tony Pua, who know the numbers, are doing right to expose the financial shenanigan of the government. And Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak is trying to silence them with legal letters.

With the compliant judges in the judiciary, Najib might succeed. But we the people know the wrongdoings of the government, and we will change the government with our votes.

Mushiro: Is it not true that PM’s wife Rosmah Mansor ordered a US$24 million diamond ring from New York, it came to Kuala Lumpur at her address, under her name and through Customs ?

Is it not true that Rosmah has more than eight very expensive Birkin bags? Is it not true that her son bought a US$110 million apartment in New York and financed the movie 'Wolves of Wall Street’?

I am waiting to see Najib being cross-examined in courts by defence lawyers. So far Najib has escaped being cross-examined in the Altantuya Shaariibuu case and the Anwar Ibrahim Sodomy II case for various reasons.

For a man who is used to speaking in a friendly gallery where the crowd is paid to cheer and clap and for a man who dares not debate Anwar, appearing for his lawsuit is an opportunity for Najib to prove that he is not a wimp.

That is, if he dare.

Gerard Lourdesamy: Do Najib and Rosmah want to take a leaf out of the PAP book just like in Singapore? Let them go ahead with the defamation suit and come to court to testify as the plaintiffs.

Rafizi and his lawyers will have a field day in cross-examining both in the full glare of the local and foreign press. Given that Najib and Rosmah are averse to testifying in court just like in Anwar Ibrahim's criminal trial and now in the late private investigator P Balasubramaniam's civil suit, this intended action will most likely not see the light of day the midst of growing concerns about the economy and our currency and Najib's declining popularity in the country and within his own party.

A defamation suit is likely to expose the ‘first couple’’s scandals and private arrangements and give former PM Dr Mahathir Mohamad and the rest ammunition to get rid of Najib on account of his overly ambitious wife.

CQ Muar: Najib, why are you now starting to sue others for defamation? You had been labelled and accused of so many more derogatory things in the past, which were much more damaging to your reputation as a prime minister, yet you took them in your stride.

Apart from all those broken promises, there were insinuations such as Scorpene commission scandal, involvement in the murder of Mongolian national Altantuya with C4 explosive, etc.

Weren't those 'wild' allegations and slanders distressful and embarrassing to your reputation? Or is it because you assume those accusations had been buried and successfully swept under the carpet, therefore encouraged and prompted you to resort to such legal measures of late?

Vijay47: It looks like Najib's lawyers graduated from the same university as our talented pro-BM cybertroopers lurking in Malaysiakini .

I readily admit my England is not all that good but what Rafizi said was "which can be used to purchase 20 expensive rings for Rosmah, each costing RM20 million." He did not say "was used or will be used".

He could have also said in a comparative or speculative sense, "could have been used to buy numerous submarines which can neither sink nor float" or Rafizi could have further said "could have been used to buy 43 tons of C4 or 17,784,269 kilograms of kangkung".

With the last statement, would the vegetable farmers in Cameron Highlands be up in arms that Rafizi had implied they were corrupt or easily bought?

What a cruel England the British left us, with subjects and predicates and passive voice and irregular verbs and tenses and past participles. I think I'll stick to good old Bahasa.

MinahBulat: Never fear Rafizi, the rakyat are here right behind you. It is only a defamation suit and your question to Najib is not defamatory. Likewise Pua's explanation on 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) is clear and lucid.

Let Najib go to court and be cross examined by Pua's lawyer, let's see if he can explain how the government's sovereign funds are being utilised. Indeed, we are curious why Goldman Sachs is paid so much.

Vgeorgemy: This shows Najib is too weak to take on these young ones in Parliament. Why challenge them in court? Take them on in Parliament and explain to them where they went wrong.

That is the way earlier leaders met their opposition, including his father, former PM Abdul Razak.

Nitendo: The opposition is fond of making lies and allegations and we will be expecting soon many of their elected leaders losing their status as MPs once the court find them guilty.

Swipenter: Lately there has been a huge surge of Umno Baru cybertroopers making an appearance in Malaysiakini .

I think this is good for us otherwise it can get a bit monotonous and dull. Keep us on our toes provided what their posts are worth reading and they are worth sparring with.

Fair Play: Just like a top model, overexposure to the camera might diminish his or her 'marketability', 'appeal' and advertising pull. Same goes for a top politician who resorts to the civil court ever so often to silent his critics.

Mosquitobrain: If the 51 percent (who didn't vote for BN in GE13) started talking, will PM Najib sue them? The jail will be overcrowded.

Rupert16: What a joke and a disgrace. The incompetent PM dare not or cannot defend his position in Parliament and uses the court to try to intimidate the opposition politicians who are seeking the truth.

Malaytoo: Indeed, isn't it the job of the PM to explain decisions and policy matters to the rakyat, rather than threatening to sue the rakyat's representatives? Unless it was a personal attack which is not the case here.

HC: The reason why Najib and his wife are subjected to intense ridicule by a large percentage of the Malaysian population is due to repeated scandals plaguing his government.

The use of the Sedition Act and now threats of legal action are the only instruments left to contain what appears to be a failing government fighting for its political life.
