Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said that organised fake identity card-making cartels no longer exist in Sabah.

According to Bernama , he added that the cartels which could have existed before have now been eradicated.

This eradication, he said, is the result of proactive measures and strict inspection implemented by the ministry and National Registration Department (NRD).

Zahid ( right ) implored to the public to inform the ministry if they have any information of more cartels sprouting in the area.

“If there are any individuals involved, we want the public to inform the ministry or NRD so we can monitor and take care of the situation as soon as possible,” he was reported in Bernama.

Zahid commented further saying that NRD no longer issues birth certificates to stateless children in Sabah, on the contrary, they are recording the births in a different coloured document.

“The security features of MyKad are also enhanced. NRD use plain-clothes officers to monitor and investigate,” he said in the Bernama report.

The much delayed Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) report on illegal immigrants, in relations to the controversial “Project IC”, was released last Wednesday.

Chief Secretary Ali Hamsa had said that the report found the production of fake ICs were financially motivated , and not political.

However, many were not satisfied with the findings of the report. One is the chairperson of Sabah Reform Party (Star) Jeffery Kitingan who said the RCI is a political ploy to cheat Sabahans into voting for BN in GE13.

On top of that, the Bersih coalition accused Ali of whitewashing the findings of the report and said it is “beyond comprehension” how Ali had reached the conclusion that there were no political motives involved.

“It is clear that there was a clandestine exercise involving senior officers in the NRD Sabah, who apparently acted on the orders from their political superiors,” they said, referring to a passage in the report that refers to the testimonies of five witnesses.

Meanwhile, a committee headed by Sabah Deputy Chief Minister Joseph Pairin Kitingan will be formed to combat future issues of such nature.
