Why did Dr M keep mum during Umno AGM?

YOURSAY 'Mahathir, blame yourself for not opening your mouth.'

Mahathir rues 1MDB not raised at Umno meet

Mosquitobrain: Former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad, you know fully well that Umno is - full of 'yes' men, including during your reign. Nobody is willing to question or dares criticise his boss for fear of losing favour and 'perks'.

I was following the events at Umno's AGM (annual general meeting) too. I was thinking, if you did not start the ball rolling, who will and who dares?

I, like many people, were expecting you to grill Prime Minister Najib Razak on issues such as independent power producers (IPPs), 1MDB, BR1M, education, economy, Sedition Act.

Instead, you did Najib a very big favour by keeping mum during the AGM. Now you're lamenting all these when things are all over.

I, like others too, are not disappointed. We know it is not over yet, at least not for you.

2Kali5: Mahathir, thank you for being on the dot in your concern over the issues, particularly with regards to 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB).

PKR vice-president Rafizi Ramli had said he is glad that he has been taken to task for bringing the issue up.

We hope the matter will be brought to trial soonest so that the full picture of this potential fiasco will be made public.

On the issue of poor English and the education system, we don't have to go very far. It is very evident with the recent appearance of comments from numerous pro-BN newcomers to Malaysiakini's comments section.

Their English is appalling, along with their understanding of current affairs, which is lacking and shallow.

Zambri Mahmud: IMDB is Najib's pet project, so who in Umno dares to raise it at the AGM? If they question it, then they can forget about their posts and benefits.

Umno Portal: Dr M, blame yourself for not opening your mouth. Why only now are you complaining? And why was your son Mukhriz keeping quiet?

Angry_Voter: The Umno delegates lack the capacity to debate issues of national importance. That is probably why they resort to what they know best: name-calling and tasteless jokes.

This is the result of Umno's own doing in keeping the party members stupid so that the leaders' positions are not challenged. Mahathir has now admitted to this.

MacMac: In fact nothing constructive or productive was discussed at the general assembly other than bashing the Chinese and insulting the Indians. It was a waste of time. Critical issues affecting the nation were kept out of the agenda.

Mushiro: Indeed, there was nothing useful discussed in the Umno AGM. Topics about anything slightly sensitive were avoided. It was mainly rhetoric and playing to the gallery to attract the attention of the boss.

The real issues were avoided and 1MDB was a no no. Even Mahathir seems to have cooled down on 1MDB and I am wondering if it was a compromise with the RCI (royal commission of inquiry) on Project IC.

Nonbeliever: Mahathir is saying, “The government is corrupt.” Surely this is seditious?

Dood: I suggest that the Sedition Act be used against Mahathir for questioning the motives and actions of the government.

He is trying to inculcate hate among citizens against the government, and for that he needs to be punished.

Kamaapo: Tun, you have said things that have to be said aloud. Thanks. Unfortunately, during your days, you had committed some of the same things you accuse Najib of. In currency trading (illegal?), you got burned.

Lopsided favours to the IPPs (independent power producers) going against TNB (Tenaga Nasional Berhad) chief Ani Arope, the crippling of English in education, the many white elephants, the haemorrhaging national coffers, et cetera.

Umno's AGM has become more of an annual narcissistic megalomaniac trance, to ridicule the minorities by creating illusionary Malay/Islam-incapacitating vampires that seemingly are ever lurking to weaken the position of Malays/Islam.

It's just to inflate the ever insatiable Malay/Islam political agenda. Other very important affairs of good governance that you have mentioned are seemingly not relevant here.

SSG: If Dr M is so clever; please tell us what great advice he has given to Proton and Petronas over the years as "adviser" to these two companies/corporations.

Especially, the last bit of advice to Petronas to invest in the Canadian Shale Gas venture in British Columbia just as the world oil prices were about to tank.

At last count, someone calculated in a KiniBiz article the amount given to Proton as grants over these last 20 over years was in the order of more than RM50 billion.

For all this money, what has Proton to show for it? And he still wants another RM3 billion more.

Yahoo: What Dr M had done in his time, right or wrong, cannot be undone. It's in the past. But Najib, being the present, can still retract or disestablish some of the plunder and mess like 1MDB, education, etc.

In the 60s, corruption was in the thousands. In the 80s, it was in the millions. Now it seems to be in the billions. I wonder in the future, would it go to the trillions?

Ipohcrite: Mahathir has now found common ground with Najib - both prime ministers have broken their promises to the rakyat while in office. That's the measure of our top politicians. Sigh.
