Sarawak DAP wants all political parties to work with the Sarawak government to amend the state constitution and return the autonomy on education back to the state.

State DAP chief Chong Chieng Jen said that the current syllabus from the Education Ministry encourages “racists and religious extremists”.

“(The) syllabus is drafted by West Malaysians, especially with the Umno agenda.  All our text and history books consist elements of ‘Ketuanan Melayu’, and elements of indoctrination and total omission on history of Sarawak.

“At the end of the day, we will not only perpetuate the Malay supremacy, but will also create more ‘Zulkifli Noordins and Ibrahim Alis’ who are racists and religious extremists,” said the MP for Bandar Kuching at a press conference yesterday.

He was referring to former Perkasa vice president Zulkifli and Perkasa president Ibrahim.

Chong ( left ), who is also the Kota Sentosa assemblyperson, also wants the state government to seize the autonomy on medical and police services.

The state only has partial control of the police, he said, and this deters local policing efforts.

He said the Rajang Security Command (Rascom), which successfully fought against the communist insurgents in Sibu, is proof that police matters should be managed locally.

The United States’ Federal Bureau of Investigation also deals only in national crime, while local policing is handled by the states, he said.

Helicopter service to provide medical services for those in rural areas must also be run by the state as it has better understanding of local needs than Putrajaya, he said.

“These three services under the federal system and the federal ministries have proven to be going down the drain,” he said.
