In Khir Toyo’s case, we’re waiting to be surprised
YOURSAY ‘Imprisoning him will bring about a mutiny in Selangor Umno.’
Counsel queries if Khir Toyo is a public servant
Kangkung: Former Selangor menteri besar Dr Mohd Khir Toyo is in this mess because of losing Selangor to Pakatan Rakyat and he is paying for it with a little inconvenience. Expect him to be acquitted as anyone connected to Umno is above the law.
On Nov 2, 2011 an unemployed man was jailed 18 months for shoplifting goods worth RM1,216 in Kuching, and here an Umno man get only 12 months’ jail for a corruption charge involving RM6.5 million.
Mosquitobrain: Khir Toyo was hit with "a lesser graft charge compared to charges under the Prevention of Corruption Act 1997."
If you’re caught stealing milk powder and foodstuffs from a hypermarket, you can get at least six months. But abusing power, cheating and gratification by the millions, you are only slapped with a 12 months’ jail term.
What a half-past-six government, with half-past-six deputy public prosecutors and judges. If in China, Khir Toyo should be a gone case by now.
Righteous: US Vice-President Joe Biden said something to that effect about our justice system . One can see it from afar.
Pemerhati: All the five Federal Court judges in the Khir Toyo case were involved either in the Perak constitutional crisis case or the Anwar Ibrahim sodomy cases, and in some cases they delivered verdicts which raised eyebrows among legal experts.
Consequently, there is a strong belief that in important cases, where Umno has an interest, these judges deliver verdicts handed to them by the Umno chief.
Khir Toyo is an Umno leader and it will be interesting to see what sort of verdict the judges will deliver.
Considering that Najib Abdul Razak and many other Umno leaders have many skeletons in their cupboards, it is most likely that, at the very most, it will be nothing more than a slap on the wrist as a severe sentence might provoke Khir Toyo into retaliating and revealing those skeletons.
Sa Tombs: Lead defence counsel Muhammad Shafee Abdullah is complaining about the charge against Khir Toyo. That is a joke considering that the Attorney-General's Chamber relies on Shafee for advice and guidance, as can be seen in the Anwar Ibrahim case.
Ray-G: Khir Toyo gave brooms to non-performers when he was Selangor MB. I guess even a broom has a higher value than the worth he had brought to the rakyat.
One year is indeed too short for a person who betrayed the trust of the people - but then, anything can happen in Bolehland.
MinahBulat: The evidence against him is very clear. The Federal Court’s duty is to see if the conviction is wrong, that there has been a miscarriage of justice or wrong principles of law are being applied. In his case, I will be very surprised if there is an acquittal.
Well Thats Fantastic: I bet he was too busy feathering his nest to collect dirt on everyone else, like the other cunning politicians.
I would put my money on him being released as it seems to be the way every case involving well-connect high-profile individuals eventually goes.
Look at the Port Klang Free Zone (PKFZ) case - a former minister just got let off for allegedly cheating on a sum of nearly RM800 million.
Armageddon: Considering Khir Toyo had repented, and also considering the millions of good things that he had done for Selangor while he was MB, he will be imprisoned for a day (to show fairness) followed by three months of house arrest.
Telestai!: I, for one, will not wait on the edge of my chair to find out if he will win the appeal. Imprisoning him will bring about a mutiny among the lower ranks in Selangor Umno. Fait accompli.
Lukesky: Here is my prediction. Let’s hope I am wrong. Khir Toyo will be acquitted or his sentence suspended for time served. Either way, he will go free.
As this is, after all, the post-election period, he was probably only convicted previously as Umno needed the ‘sandiwara’ to get the votes.
The smile on Khir Toyo's face in picture above says it all. He may follow the footstep of Abdul Razak Baginda (who was accused of abetting in the murder of Mongolian national Altantuya Shaariibuu.
Tok Karut: As corruption is rife in the ranks, a jail sentence is highly appropriate to reflect the rakyat's odium and contempt, and a deterrent. Money, he has plenty, jail is best.
Odysseus: I am sitting here with popcorn and Coke, waiting to be surprised.
