Heavy rain did not stop some 40 Universiti Malaya students from camping in front of UM to protest disciplinary action on seven UM student activists.

Two students, including former student union president Fahmi Zainol, were suspended, four fined and one issued a warning for their part in Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim talk on campus on Oct 27, which was barred by UM.

Six tents were erected in front of the campus’ Kuala Lumpur gate, with students spotted drawing posters with slogans condemning the disciplinary action.

Ahmad Aqiel, a student activist who had camped out in the 'Occupy UM' movement since this afternoon said they will stay there until UM rescinds action against the seven students.

"Our spirits will not be broken and we will continue with this struggle," said the third semester Islamic Studies undergraduate.

More tents will be set up as more students are expected to join the peaceful protest, he said.

Several students gave speeches tonight while others were seen revising or completing their final assignments, in preparation of the final examinations in the next fortnight.

Eight UM students, popularly known as UM8, faced disciplinary hearing yesterday and only one - Abraham Au - was found not guilty.

The university management refused to allow the Anwar talk and locked the gates, prompting 2,000 students and supporters to storm onto campus.

"Out of our love for justice, we gather here today to ask Malaysia to look at the decadence of our university," Occupy UM coordinator Wan Syamimi ( left ) said in a statement.

Meanwhile, PKR Youth wing deputy chief Fahmi Fadzil said in a statement today that Malaysia needs more student leaders like Fahmi Zainol and Safwan Shamsuddin, who he labelled as "brave youths".

Both of them have been suspended and fined by the university.

"I regret the actions of the UM administrators, who want youths to live under a cocoon, not to interact with the society and become robotic yes men," Fahmi said.

"While the country faces several crises, it is the youths who spark the spirit or awakening leading to a better country," the PKR Youth vice president added.
