DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang today urged Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak to endorse the open letter penned by the ‘Eminent 25' in order to support moderation against extremism and intolerance.

In a statement, Lim said that such an endorsement would send a “clear message” to the rest of the world that the Malaysian government is fully committed to moderation.

“The voices of moderate Malaysians, regardless of race, religion, gender, age or political affiliation, are being raised to drown out the cacophony of the coarse loud-mouths and thugs and those preaching intolerance, extremism and bigotry,” he said.

“The question is whether Najib will provide leadership for the voices of moderation,” he added.

The Eminent 25, in their letter, had urged Najib to show leadership in the face of rising extremism and intolerance in the country.

However, to date, the premier had not responded to the letter or the contents in it, including the proposal to set up a panel of experts to resolve conflicts between Islamic law and civil law.

“Is Najib prepared to present the open letter of the 25 eminents to the cabinet to get  ministerial endorsement to show to the nation and the world that the Malaysian government is fully committed to the course of moderation against intolerance, extremism and bigotry?” Lim asked.
