A photograph depicting Najib Abdul Razak teeing off with US President Barack Obama in Hawaii has opened a floodgate of criticisms.

The prime minister was drubbed for playing golf when the nation is being ravaged by floods affecting close to 100,000 people.

However, a pro-Umno website has defended him by turning the tables on the opposition instead.

An article published on MyKMU.net referred to a photograph showing Anwar Ibrahim and his wife Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail cycling in New Zealand.

“Wan Azizah is the state assemblyperson of Kajang. The place has been hit by floods for two days in a row.

“Forget her, even her ‘fan’ has not showed up (in the area),” read the article, taking a jibe at the PKR president’s fondness for the handheld Chinese fan.

On the contrary, the article pointed out that before meeting Obama, Najib had visited flood victims in the PM’s parliamentary constituency Pekan on Dec 20.

“In short, Najib puts the people first before golf clubs and Obama,” it said.

‘Not golf but business’

The article noted that apart from Najib, BN ministers and MPs have also been working hard to help those affected by the floods.

What is important, it added, is that the prime minister and other BN leaders are concerned about the people.

Even in the absence of Najib, the article said rescue and relief works are being carried out by the relevant government agencies.

“All these show that the leaders are responsible and keep to the slogan of ‘people first’.

“Najib did not meet Obama in Hawaii for nothing, there are issues related to the nation involved. It was not a normal golf game,” it added.

Not all were impressed with the PM’s visit, though, as one doctor at a government clinic in Badang that has been stranded in the floods posted a sarcastic remark on his Facebook.

“Oh, and yes, I would like to wish our prime minister happy holidaying in Hawaii, while our holidays have been frozen and are sacrificing our lives for the sake of our beloved citizens.”
