State DAP economic development bureau chief Chong Zhemin hammered the BN-run Perak government for rejecting the RM100,000 donation from the Pakatan-controlled Selangor.
As the money was meant for more than 7,000 flood victims, he described the state government as being “irresponsible, heartless and soulless”.
“Perak BN should stop playing partisan politics at a time when Malaysia is facing the worst ever floods in history and immediately accept the RM100,000 donation,” he said.
Yesterday, Selangor exco Dr Daroyah Alwi was reported as saying that Perak rejected the donation.
Chong questioned Perak’s refusal when BN state governments of Pahang and Terengganu can accept Selangor’s help.
“This excuse is totally unacceptable and childish since the Pahang and Terengganu state government has already accepted the donation,” he said.
Umno exco: Shut-up and work
Meanwhile, Perak exco Nizar Zakaria told the opposition to “shut their mouths” and work together to assist the victims.
He also wanted all negative speculations to cease and criticised those who are using the floods as an excuse to fire salvos at the federal government.
Nizar said only the flood victims would know who had helped them more in their time of need.
“The federal government does not seek praises or adulation. It is our responsibility (to help). But it is unfair to blame the federal government in all aspects.
“This is a natural disaster. We should be joining hands, regardless of parties, for the people’s sake,” he told Umno Online .
The exco cited the situation in Kelantan, where the federal government channelled aid despite the state being under the control of PAS.
“So for me, it is best for the opposition leaders... to shut their mouths and come to the ground to help the people.
“This is not the time to play politics. This is the time to work, sacrifice and fulfill the trust placed in you by the people during elections,” he said.
Calling on the opposition to be rational, Nazri said the people who are suffering do not have time to entertain “cheap politics”.
