IGP, no laws in the world can stop terrorism

YOURSAY ‘Khalid Abu Bakar’s reasoning is shallow and too simplistic.’

IGP: Paris attack shows we need Sedition Act

Mushiro : There are so many things we need in Malaysia, compared to the Sedition Act. We need a corrupt-free government, a racist-free government, an honest Election Commission, an alert army, a fair and independent judiciary and a clean police force.

The Sedition Act is not a high priority and it is mainly used to hassle Pakatan leaders. Perkasa, Isma and Umno leaders are never touched by this act.

Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who has compromised the country with his letter to the FBI to save an alleged international crook, is not even investigated by the police or reprimanded by Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.

Versey : The Star reported that there's a shop in Bandar Baru Bangi that has been operating for a good three months, selling flags, T-shirts and caps - all items bearing the symbols of militant groups - especially the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) and the Taliban - and imported from Indonesia.

It is reported that the shop seemed to be a hub for militants and their supporters, who go there to equip themselves with the latest ISIS paraphernalia. According to the shopkeeper, there's a high demand for the merchandise.

Is Bandar Baru Bangi such a remote area that the operations of such a shop could easily escape the "watchful eyes" of the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM)?

Or is the operations of such a shop - which the general public perceives as promoting a kind of ideology tantamount to terrorism - harmless, compared to the interpretations of the law by lawyers, lawmakers, academicians and those who want to see the authorities upholding law and order in the country?

It says enough of the real problems in this country.

Cantabrigian : Is inspector-general of police (IGP) Khalid Abu Bakar a government servant or an Umno politician? His reasoning is shallow and too simplistic. What he is trying to say is, “we want to prevent people from becoming terrorists, so let's punish people who exercise freedom of speech”. Err, say what?

First of all, no laws in the world can stop terrorism. You can try to prevent it, but when it happens, it happens. You can't stop a random guy picking up a knife or baseball bat and start injuring the public.

Secondly, the Malaysian ruling government has a track record of using the Sedition Act against its dissenters - especially opposition politicians - so the law has a tendency to be used in order to justify institutional terrorism by forcing people to comply with only a certain line of thinking or ideology, which makes a mockery out of democracy itself.

Thirdly, you will never use it against real thugs like Pekida, Perkasa, Isma and the likes of them, so what justice are you talking about?

Malaysia ku : Draw what lesson from the Paris attack? Do you, or don't you, irrevocably condemn - like so many prominent Muslim clerics, and virtually the whole world - the actions of the terrorists? Or are you joining the likes of the ISIS, Al-Qaeda and Boko Haram, who rejoiced at the massacre?

Why compare such heinous acts with the Sedition Act?

Anonymous_1415956909 : The IGP's reasoning and justification to hold on to the Sedition Act is irrational. The Paris attack is being taken advantage by the government to limit the freedom of speech.

The free flow of information in the Internet era is a fact that is going to be a part of human progress. People must learn to live and adapt to the freedom of speech in their daily life. We can't run away from this fact of life. Limiting or curtailing the freedom of speech is not the solution.

The Analyser : The Paris attack was on the people, not the government. An attack by a lunatic religion which is supported by the Malaysian government.

While there is no question that this is an idiotic statement by the IGP, the fact remains that it wasn't made for the thinking Malaysian.

The statement was directed at the mindless masses of Malay Muslims. Those Malays who are already rendered non-thinking by the needs of their religion, and those Malays who will believe everything they are told.

Angel : What about you? Not following a court order is not seditious?

Jim59 : Yes, the Sedition Act is necessary as your guns tend to fall into the sea and bombs are good for scrap metal .

Mohican : Likewise, constant police brutality shows that we need the Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission (IPCMC), you got it?

Ipohcrite : This is exactly the kind of statement which our country's leaders that which make Malaysia a laughing stock in the eyes of the world. The silver lining, is that the IGP might have a great post-retirement career doing comedy.
