GST a result of Putrajaya’s failed governance

YOURSAY ‘More in government coffers does not transfer to more development.’

Gov't decides who lives, who dies with GST

Dalvik: The 'selling point' of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) on mass media advertisement has always been 'increasing income for the country for better life'.

But fundamental issues such as leakages and wastage as highlighted by the annual auditor-general's reports were never addressed.

For me, every government should practise good governance before asking for more from the citizens. In GST's case, I see it as a punishment of the rakyat.

Snake-in-the-Grass: Less costly lifestyles are available to all who want it. Go live in the kampungs and stop shopping at Pavillion/Parkson/Jusco/Tesco. But then, Tesco and Giant prices are sometimes even lower than many kampung shops.

There is no need to have designer drugs when the simple sinseh and bomoh herbs will do. I can still get bread and Milo for less than RM2, and so I only need RM100 per month to survive.

Haveagreatday: "..and it will be the government that decides on who lives and dies." Yes, Josie Fernandez, I know of small family-run concerns deciding to throw in the towel as they feel the added IT (information technology) costs that come with the GST are too much trouble.

But of particular concern is the added cost of medicines plus the fact that GST "takes a larger percentage of income from low- income groups than from high income groups".

I wonder how many rakyat can survive like Snake-in-the-Grass on Milo and bread throughout the year.

Concerned Malaysian: This government will do as it likes, they do not know the hardship of the people, all of them are sitting on a mountain of wealth. I hope the BN grassroots suffer the most, then the fools will know what blind loyalty can do.

Wira: Let me clear a misconception about GST. GST is only paid by the final consumer. It does not increase the tax paid by a registered company as all rated taxes are claimable and refundable by the government. So if anyone suffers from GST, it's the final consumer.

My employees (Malays) think that the tax is good because now businessmen (read Chinese?) cannot run away from taxes because GST must be paid by them.

Those who explain GST to those nice folks are probably sowing the wrong message for their political gain.

Sanchez8899: Why GST? Because it will lower business cost. Under the current system, some businesses pay multiple taxes and higher levels of tax-on-tax (cascading tax).

With the GST, businesses can benefit from recovering input tax on raw materials and incurred expenses, thus reducing costs.

It does not matter how many stages where a particular good or service goes through the supply chain because the input tax incurred at the previous stage is always deducted by the businesses at the next in the supply chain.

Onlooker: The issue of medicine cost is often overlooked although it is mentioned in the article. Pharmaceutical companies are currently increasing their prices so that the increases will not appear to be because of the imposition of GST come April.

And they are not only increasing by 6 percent. The quantum is more like 20-30 percent in some cases. This will affect the elderly and those on long-term medication as these are 'special' drugs not covered in the Health Ministry 'blue book'.

Presumably they will come out to say they are absorbing the GST and thus present an altruistic face.

WhenDcountryGoes2Ddowgs: PM Najib Razak wants those who eat lobster to live. If you are sick and need medications... go and die?

WeLoveDemocracy: At one time, wealthy families used generation-skipping trusts (also GST) to avoid estate taxes.

Usually, wealth is subject to estate tax when it passes from a person to his children, and then again when it passes from those children to their own children, and so on down the family line.

Using a GST to pass wealth directly to grandchildren or great-grandchildren got the family out of paying one or more rounds of estate tax.

Now, however, the federal government levies a tax on generation-skipping transfers designed to recover lost estate tax revenue. Even with this tax in place, though, GSTs can provide tax benefits.

Drngsc: More in government coffers does not transfer to more development and care for the people, maybe just a small portion. The greater portion goes to Umnoputras and their cronies.

It is obscene to see people using government jets to go around the world when four states are underwater. Just simply obscene. Please think of the poor. No GST, please.

Lone_Star: GST is less than 90 days away. But the way things are, it looks like it is a done thing. The rakyat are waiting for that someone else to organise a ‘No GST’ rally.

One does not see any effort being made by the rakyat to see the GST is not implemented. It is time to ‘turun padang’.
