PKR’s number-cruncher Rafizi Ramli has raised alarm bells for 1Malaysia Development Bhd's (1MDB) mounting debt situation, citing additional bridging loans it has taken - particularly its US$1 billion loan from six banks led by Deutsche Bank.

The US$1 billion (RM3.6 billion) loan reported by international magazine International Financing Review ( IFR ) has to be repaid in September 2015.

1MDB reportedly took the loan in October 2014 in the midst of its debt crisis.

This revelation comes on top of a controversial RM2 billion that 1MDB has borrowed from tycoon Ananda Krishnan.

“So, what assets will 1MDB sell to pay the US$1 billion loan come September 2015?” said Rafizi in a statement today.

The PKR secretary-general said what was more worrying, was how the loan had been taken with the condition that it will be paid in September 2015 using funds accumulated from the listing of 1MDB’s independent power producers’ (IPPs) assets.

He pointed out that the listing process has continued to be delayed, and is expected to face continued problems due to the delay of the Jimah Timur IPP project and 1MDB’s financial credibility, which continues to worsen.

“Without the Jimah Timur IPP project and 1MDB’s debt woes, it is expected that any listing involving 1MDB will not attract the interests of investors.

“It is obvious that 1MDB won’t only have a problem to pay the RM2 billion loan taken from Malayan Banking Bhd and RHB Bank Bhd, it will also have problems to pay the US$1 billion bridging loan to the six banks,” said the Pandan MP.

It was reported by Reuters yesterday that billionaire Ananda Krishnan will be lending 1MDB RM2 billion to settle the loan by Maybank and RHB.
