The police say they have information that Anwar Ibrahim's supporters will gather near Sogo and Dataran Merdeka this weekend to protest against his imprisonment, but Anwar's party PKR has denied it is aware of any such gathering.

            

Deputy Inspector-General of Police Noor Rashid Ibrahim is quoted in theSun today as saying that the police are prepared to face any such gathering.

"Our responsibility is to ensure that such gatherings are done in accordance with the law, in a peaceful and orderly manner," Noor Rashid is reported as saying.

However, PKR secretary-general Rafizi Ramli told Malaysiakini he is not aware of any such gathering and that the only campaign he is aware of is the "March 2 Freedom" campaign.

This campaign was announced by Anwar's children yesterday, following Anwar’s sodomy conviction on Tuesday, which sees him serving a five-year sentence in the Sungai Buloh Prison.

"I am not aware of it. All I am aware of is what has been announced by the party," Rafizi said.

However, Rafizi did not rule out the possibility of such a gathering being "spontaneously" organised by Anwar's supporters.

"It can be something that takes place spontaneously," he added.
