Some 400 students today hit the streets of Kuala Lumpur to protest the jailing of opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim.

Converging at the Sogo shopping mall as early as 4pm, they held up banners which had slogans like "Judges are biased" and "The people are sodomised by (Prime Minister) Najib (Abdul Razak)" as they sang the students' song.

The students, mostly clad in black, were also joined by supporters and activists such as Adam Adli, Safuan Anang, KS Bawani and Fahmi Zainol.

Also present was Anwar's daughter, Nurul Izzah Anwar, who is also Lembah Pantai MP, PKR Youth chief Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, and Simpang Pulai state assemblyperson Tan Kar Hing.

The crowd later marched towards Dataran Merdeka - about one kilometre away - while they chanted, "Reformasi".

The demonstration brought traffic to a standstill. There are some police present, but they only watch on.

However, the protesters were not able to enter Dataran Merdeka as it is cordoned off on weekends.

They then turned into Jalan Tun Perak, marching on for another kilometre to Puduraya where they recited the "Youths' Oath".

Along the way, a police bus parked along the road was vandalised by some masked demonstrators.

A protester had sprayed a red "X" over the word "police" on the bus.

The words "F**K" in black was also sprayed on the bus accompanied by the anarchism symbol.

At Puduraya, Adam read out the the ‘Youth's Oath’ and vowed that they will turn every Saturday into routine protest against the government.

Meanwhile, Fahmi, a former Universiti Malaya student council president, said they donned black T-shirts to mark the “death of democracy”.

"Today we expected 500 people to turn up, we will ensure next week more will turn out until Najib's government falls," he said.

He added the demonstration today was inspired by the 1998 reformasi movement, which also started out at Sogo.

The demonstrators dispersed peacefully at 7.15pm.
