Former Sarawak chief minister's son Mahmud Abu Bekir Taib had an heated exchange with the lawyer of his ex-wife, Shanaz Abdul Majid, during cross-examination at the hearing of her RM100 million muta'ah (conciliatory gift) demand at the Kuala Lumpur Syariah Court.

Abu Bekir was upset when lawyer Akbardin Abdul Kader ( right in photo ) accused him of falsely estimating the value of a house he bought for his ex-wife at Bukit Damansara when the pair was still married.

Akbardin had accused him of pricing the current value of the house at between RM7 and RM8 million when the current value was roughly between RM3 million and 3.5 million.

Abu Bekir demanded for proof on the current estimate of the house.

"How can that be? From whose source is this from? Where is the proof? Who made the estimate without proper proof," he demanded.

The house was given to Shanaz as a gift during their marriage which lasted almost two decades. The couple divorced on May 11, 2011.

'Australian woman at sister’s wedding'

Meanwhile, Akbardin also questioned Abu Bekir on bringing an Australian woman to his sister’s wedding in 2000 without the knowledge of Shanaz or his parents.

He clarified that Louise Aida Hiley was his second wife and provided a certificate to prove that the two marred in Thailand before his sister’s wedding.

The lawyer went on to suggest that Abu Bekir had insulted and hurt the feelings of Shanaz’s family, who were also present at his sister's wedding. Her mother immediately flew back to Kuala Lumpur.

"You brought the woman to the wedding, it humiliated and shamed the family of the plaintiff and broke her heart," said Akbardin during his cross-examination.

Abu Bekir claimed that he had no idea about their presence at the wedding and reiterated that it was not his intention to humiliate Shanaz ( right ).

He also denied knowing that Shanaz was a still a single mother and whether or not she had remarried since the couple separated.

This was in response to the accusation by Akbardin that the defendant had deprived Shanaz of a "golden opportunity" to remarry and have more children.

"I do not know. I did not have any intention to torture her like this as I had already allowed her to divorce and remarry. I even suggested that I would help her on that," Abu Bekir said.

Apart from the a muta'ah, Shanaz is also seeking RM200 million to fund their 23-year old son’s education.

She is also seeking RM300 million in joint matrimonial assets from Bekir’s assets, which he amassed during their years of marriage.

Judge Muhamad Abdul Karim Wahab postponed the court hearing to April 27 for the continuation of Bekir's cross-examination.
